The Ministry of Health has announced a major investigation into allegations of negligence at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, following the tragic death of a patient who was reportedly abandoned after being evacuated from the facility.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry, Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has directed that the conduct of certain officials at the hospital be reported to both the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Attorney General’s Department.

“The committee also recommended that the said staff be sanctioned by the Ghana Health Service through Internal Disciplinary Procedures.

“The Ministry is of the view that in light of the gravity of the issue captured in the report, involving the loss of life, further investigations should be carried out by the Honourable Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.”

The GHS initiated an inquiry into the actions of hospital employees following a serious incident involving the improper handling and subsequent death of a patient.

According to the GHS report, the patient in question was evacuated from the Trauma and Specialist Hospital to Ojobi under conditions that were deemed inappropriate. Tragically, the patient was abandoned at the Ojobi facility, which did not have adequate resources to care for her, leading to her death.

The investigation identified several hospital staff who were directly involved in the planning and execution of this transfer. Their actions, according to the GHS report, fell significantly below the expected standards of care and professional conduct.

The Ministry requested the assistance of the Attorney General to initiate an investigation into the case to determine the culpability of the affected staff members and take any further action deemed appropriate.

Dr. Okoe Boye emphasized that internal disciplinary measures would not preclude further legal action. “Internal disciplinary action is an important first step, but in cases of this magnitude, the legal system must also be engaged to ensure comprehensive accountability,” he stated.

The tragic incident and the subsequent investigation have prompted the Ministry of Health to reaffirm its dedication to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery across the country.

The Ministry expressed its determination to prevent a recurrence of such incidents by enforcing strict adherence to professional standards within all healthcare facilities.

“The Ministry reiterates its dedication to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery and ensuring that the tragic circumstances leading to this incident are not repeated.”

The Ministry of Health

The Ministry also highlighted its intention to conduct regular audits of hospital procedures, particularly in cases involving the transfer of critically ill patients.

Furthermore, the Ministry indiated plans to implement additional training programs aimed at improving decision-making and emergency response protocols among healthcare personnel.

In a bid to promote transparency, the Ministry of Health has made the full report of the GHS investigative committee available to the public. The report, which details the findings of the investigation, can be accessed on the Ministry’s official website via a designated link.

The Ministry encouraged all stakeholders, including members of the public, healthcare professionals, and patient advocacy groups, to review the report and provide feedback.

The Ministry of Health has promised regular updates on the progress of the investigation as more information becomes available. In the meantime, the Ministry urged anyone with concerns about healthcare delivery to reach out directly to the Ministry or local health authorities.

This case marks a critical moment for healthcare accountability in Ghana. With the involvement of the Attorney General’s Department and the CID, it is expected that the investigation will be thorough and impartial, and those responsible for the patient’s death will face appropriate consequences.
