Ghana has been thrown into a state of national mourning following the tragic loss of eight distinguished citizens in a military helicopter crash at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region.

The victims, comprising high-ranking government officials, security personnel, and party executives, perished in what is being described as a devastating blow to the country.

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, in a solemn message on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, conveyed the nation’s deep sorrow at the loss of what she described as “dedicated sons of our land who served Ghana with honour and commitment.”

The crash claimed the lives of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defense; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology; and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman.

Other victims include Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; Squadron Leader Peter Anala, the pilot; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

“These were dedicated sons of our land who served Ghana with honour and commitment,” Professor Opoku-Agyemang wrote in her tribute, capturing the mood of a nation shaken by the scale and significance of the loss.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We share in your grief and pray that the Almighty grants you comfort and strength during this unimaginably difficult time.”

President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the deceased. During this period, all Ghanaians are being called upon to pause, reflect, and honour the memories of the eight men whose service to the nation, according to the Vice President, exemplified courage, patriotism, and dedication.

This unprecedented tragedy has sent shockwaves across the country. Dr. Omane Boamah, a long-time member of the NDC and a respected public servant, had held various ministerial positions before his most recent appointment as Minister for Defense.

His contributions to Ghana’s public health and communications sectors had earned him admiration across political divides.

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, another towering figure in Ghanaian politics, seasoned Member of Parliament, a known advocate for transparency in governance, and a passionate environmentalist.

His appointment as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology was widely seen as an opportunity to push for reforms in environmental policy and climate change action.

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, who served as a Regional Minister and later a national vice chairman of the NDC, had a long history of political service that spanned decades. He was known for his commitment to grassroots mobilization and his deep connection with party supporters across the country.

The loss of Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, and the three military officers — Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, Squadron Leader Peter Anala, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — further deepens the grief, as their contributions straddled both the political and security architecture of the country.

In her message, Professor Opoku-Agyemang also made a compassionate appeal to the general public and the media. “We respectfully urge the public and media to accord the families the privacy and space they need to grieve and heal in peace,” she said, underscoring the emotional toll the tragedy has exacted on relatives and loved ones of the deceased.

There is a strong sense of solidarity in grief as the country gets ready for the official period of mourning. People, politicians, civil society organizations, and foreign partners have showered social media and news outlets with tributes.

In remembrance of the fallen, candlelight vigils and interfaith prayer services are scheduled to be held in a number of locations.

In her closing remarks, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang expressed a heartfelt wish that captures the collective sentiment of the country: “May the souls of our departed countrymen rest in perfect peace.”

Despite how painful it is, this tragic event has united Ghana in its sorrow. It serves as a sobering reminder of the frailty of life and the sacrifice made by those who defend the country.
