79th Anniversary of the United Nations

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in collaboration with the United Nations Office in Ghana and its partners, will mark the 79th Anniversary of the United Nations today, Thursday, 24th October 2024.

The commemoration event, scheduled to take place at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, will be held under the theme “Working Together Towards Peace and Sustainable Development in Ghana for Present and Future Generations.”

This theme emphasizes the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and international cooperation in addressing the pressing challenges of peace and sustainable development both within Ghana and on a global scale.

“The celebration which will be marked with an array of activities was preceded by a Peace Walk which took place on Saturday, 19th October 2024.

“A flag-raising ceremony and a photo exhibition will be held at the Forecourt of the State House on Thursday, 24th October, 2024.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration

The celebration, a significant event in Ghana’s diplomatic calendar, aims to highlight the enduring relationship between the UN and Ghana, focusing on their joint efforts to promote peace, security, and development.

With Ghana being a longstanding member of the United Nations, the commemoration not only reflects on global milestones but also shines a light on Ghana’s contributions to international peace, security, and its own path towards sustainable development.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the day will also feature a Model United Nations General Assembly Session, where young people from various schools and institutions will simulate UN debates and discussions, focusing on real-world issues affecting Ghana and the global community.

This session aims to inspire the next generation of leaders to engage with international affairs and embrace diplomacy as a tool for conflict resolution and global cooperation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration revealed that in the lead-up to the anniversary, the ministry alongside the UN Office in Ghana, had engaged in a series of media activities to raise awareness about the significance of the UN’s work in the country.

“Since 21st October, 2024 to educate the general public on the aims and achievements of the United Nations, highlighting its activities in Ghana,” the ministry disclosed stressing that these engagements aimed to enhance public understanding of the UN’s role in Ghana and its broader global mandate, while also spotlighting key developmental challenges that require collective action.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration further emphasize the United Nations’ longstanding presence in Ghana, working in close partnership with the government, civil society, development partners, and the private sector.

“This collaboration aims at bolstering Ghana’s developmental endeavours in line with national priorities and the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration

Through its various agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN has supported key initiatives aimed at improving education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and economic development in Ghana.

One of the UN’s key contributions to Ghana has been in the area of peace and security. Ghana, widely regarded as a stable and peaceful nation in the West African region, has been a vocal advocate for regional peace and security.

During its tenure on the United Nations Security Council from 2022 to 2023, Ghana championed initiatives aimed at enhancing global peace and security, particularly on the African continent.

The 79th Anniversary of the United Nations in Ghana serves as a reminder of the critical importance of international cooperation in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

It reaffirms Ghana’s commitment to the values of the United Nations—peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development. The celebration not only highlights Ghana’s contributions to global peace and development but also calls for continued collaboration to build a better future for present and future generations.
