Bawah Mogtari Outlines Mahama’s Vision to Transform Agriculture

Joyce Bawah Mogtari Esq., Spokesperson for the Mahama 2024 Campaign

The spokesperson for the Mahama 2024 Campaign, Joyce Bawah Mogtari has outlined former President John Mahama’s ambitious agricultural strategy to transform Ghana’s farming landscape when elected President in the upcoming elections.

The renowned legal practitioner and advocate emphasized that former President Mahama’s agenda for the agriculture sector goes beyond mere support—it seeks to inspire the youth to take up agriculture as a viable, sustainable career choice.

Speaking ahead of the Ghana Youth in Agriculture Summit at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where she will present on “Entrepreneurship and Youth Empowerment: A Catalyst for National Development,” Lawyer Mogtari highlighted the central components of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2024 Manifesto.

“As the son of one of Ghana’s foremost indigenous farmers, Mahama, in the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto, has pledged to revitalise agriculture and make it more ‘sexy’ and appealing to the youth”.

Farmers Services Centres

To meet this goal, Lawyer Mogtari noted that the next former President Mahama’s National Democratic Congress administration plans to establish Farmer Services Centres across Ghana.

These centres envisioned as modern agricultural hubs, will offer a one-stop shop for a range of essential farming inputs and services, including fertilisers, seedlings, and other tools to enhance sustainable farming practices.

According to Lawyer Mogtari, data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) reveals that approximately 47% of Ghanaians are farmers, underscoring the importance of the agricultural sector to the country’s economy and food security.

However, many of these farmers according to her lack the resources and technology to operate effectively. She argued that rather than each farmer bearing the burden of costly machinery and equipment, the Farmer Services Centres will address critical agricultural needs such as land clearing, planting, and harvesting.

The Special Aide to the former President further explained that by reducing the financial and logistical constraints on farmers, the initiative aims to empower Ghana’s youth to see farming as a profitable venture.

“These centers are about more than convenience; they represent a structural shift in how we support our farmers, young and old. With this, Mahama envisions not only food security but a robust farming culture that attracts and benefits young people.”

Provision of Irrigation Facilities

Moreover, Joyce Bawah Mogtari pointed out that the provision of irrigation facilities will also be central to former President Mahama’s agricultural strategy.

Acknowledging Ghana’s reliance on seasonal rain-fed agriculture, Lawyer Mogtari confirmed that the incoming National Democratic Congress administration would prioritize irrigation systems to enable year-round farming.

Through this, Lawyer Mogtari emphasized that former President Mahama aims to ensure Ghana’s food self-sufficiency, stabilize food prices, and generate surplus produce for export.

This measure, she assured would be given timely, given Ghana’s fluctuating food import bills and rising costs of staples.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the Spokesperson for the Mahama 2024 Campaign expressed deep concerns over the inflationary pressures and increasing costs of farming inputs, many smallholder farmers struggle to remain productive and profitable.

She reaffirmed former President Mahama’s commitment to strengthening the sector, noting, “Mahama’s administration will establish an agriculture policy framework to make farming sustainable, profitable, and inclusive of our young people.”

At the UPSA event, Lawyer Joyce Bawah Mogtari will expand on these ideas by addressing how agriculture can fuel youth entrepreneurship, which she believes is crucial for national development.

She emphasized that under Mahama, Ghana’s agriculture sector would undergo the necessary transformations to harness the untapped potential of its youthful population.

“My personal commitment is to reassure the youth that the future of agriculture will be in safe hands under the National Democratic Congress, led by Mahama”.

Lawyer Joyce Bawah Mogtari’s remarks also highlighted former President Mahama’s long-term vision of a “Ghana Beyond Aid” where a revitalized agriculture sector anchors national food security and economic resilience.

For her by focusing on modernizing agriculture and integrating the youth into the sector, Mahama aims to redefine Ghana’s agricultural industry for generations to come.

With the establishment of Farmer Services Centres and a commitment to year-round farming through enhanced irrigation, Lawyer Mogtari emphasized that former President Mahama’s plans signal a new dawn for Ghanaian agriculture, one that aligns national goals with the aspirations of Ghana’s young people.

She closed by reinforcing the former President’s call to action, stating, “Together, we can build the Ghana we want with Mahama.”
