The Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, is set to embark on a two-day campaign tour of the Volta Region, a stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress, starting on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The Deputy Spokesperson for the NDC’s running mate, Eric Adjei, in a statement, noted that the tour will cover eleven constituencies, during which Prof. Opoku-Agyemang will engage directly with various community members and local organizations, reinforcing her party’s commitment to grassroots development.

“While on the first day, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang will visit North Tongu, South Tongu, Keta, Ketu South, Akatsi North and Adaklu Constituencies, she will campaign in Ho Central, Ho West, South Dayi, North Dayi, and Hohoe Constituencies on the second day when she wraps up her tour of the region’.

Focus on Inclusive Dialogue with Constituents

In a strategic move to foster grassroots support, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang will use the tour to meet with groups often at the heart of community development.

These include artisans, queen mothers, youth groups, seamstresses, teachers, and other professionals, each playing a vital role in the social and economic fabric of the region.

This choice according to the statement reflects the NDC’s agenda of inclusivity and its focus on building resilient local economies, which Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has consistently championed as part of her vision.

According to the Deputy Spokesperson for the NDC’s running mate, Eric Adjei, this tour “reaffirms Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s commitment to listening directly to the concerns of the people and providing a platform for their voices to be heard in national discourse.”

The focus on direct engagement is seen as a strategy to shore up the NDC’s support base in the Volta Region and to reassure constituents of the NDC’s responsiveness to local needs.

The engagements in these areas are anticipated to delve into the NDC’s plans for education, rural development, and youth empowerment—key issues that resonate strongly in the Volta Region.

Her campaign activities are likely to include interactive sessions with educators and students, where she can elaborate on her educational reforms and initiatives, drawing on her experience as a former Minister of Education.

Symbolic Celebration of the Hogbetsotso Festival

In a show of solidarity and cultural respect, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang joined the people of Anloga over the weekend to celebrate the Hogbetsotso Festival.

For Eric Adjei, Prof. Opoku-Agyemany’s participation in the festival underscores the NDC’s acknowledgement of the Volta Region’s cultural heritage and her respect for traditional values—a gesture that is likely to strengthen her rapport with the region’s residents.

It is anticipated that this outreach to the Volta Region’s traditional communities will deepen trust and build upon the NDC’s longstanding relationship with the people in the region.

The Volta Region, often regarded as a key NDC stronghold, will play an instrumental role in the party’s performance in the upcoming general elections.

The NDC’s approach appears to be one of solidifying its base while also addressing issues that may appeal to swing voters in Hohoe and other constituencies.

In the days leading up to her tour, the NDC has ramped up its messaging on the need for economic renewal, stronger social policies, and education reforms, with Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s academic and policy background positioning her as a credible advocate for these causes.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s tour of the Volta Region marks a strategic push by the NDC to solidify its traditional strongholds while aiming to broaden its appeal through direct engagement.

With her strong focus on inclusivity and grassroots dialogue, the NDC’s vice presidential candidate is expected to leave a lasting impression on Volta Region constituents, a move that may prove pivotal for the NDC’s overall campaign.

Her tour will also serve as a vital litmus test for the NDC’s support base and may offer insights into the key issues shaping voter sentiment ahead of the December 7 elections.
