Gyampo Challenges Kufuor’s Neutrality, Urges Focus on National Unity

Governments To Discontinue Blowing Their Horns – Prof. Gyampo

Professor Ransford Gyampo, Political Scientist - University of Ghana

Prof. Ransford Gyampo, a political scientist at the University of Ghana, has commended former President John Agyekum Kufuor for his stature as a great statesman.

He noted that such a reputation comes with the expectation that Kufuor would maintain a position above partisan politics, serving as a unifying figure for all Ghanaians.

However, Prof. Gyampo expressed concern over recent comments made by the former President.

He argued that these remarks appear to unnecessarily undermine Alan Kyerematen, a politician who faced significant challenges within the NPP despite his close association with Kufuor.

Gyampo suggested that such statements could be seen as a betrayal of Kyerematen, given the history of their relationship and Kufuor’s influence within the party.

“Remember, in 1996, Alan took a unilateral decision to step down as a preferred presidential candidate put forward by the Young Executives Forum of the NPP just because you and the likes of Appiah Menka went to plead with him to support your candidature.

“We also know that you were among the first to ask Alan in 2007 to concede defeat just to prevent a re-run of the presidential primaries of the NPP, which he could have won, given the fact that all resources were behind him”.

Prof. Gyampo suggested that upon examining the reasons behind former President Kufuor’s apparent public betrayal of Alan Kyerematen, it became evident that one key factor is Alan’s unwillingness to approach Kufuor to seek his support.

Gyampo expressed disappointment that such personal dynamics could influence the former President’s public stance, particularly towards someone who has faced significant challenges within the NPP.

He emphasized that this revelation raises questions about the role of personal loyalty and expectations in shaping political alliances and decisions. “I know, this makes you feel a bit slighted but you are a statesman”.

The political scientist further acknowledged that former President Kufuor has every right to express his personal preferences, especially in matters of leadership and politics.

However, he urged the former President to exercise this right discreetly, such as through his vote, rather than through public endorsements that may deepen divisions.

Prof. Gyampo encouraged Kufuor to use his esteemed position and influence to focus on promoting reconciliation, fostering mediation, and advocating for national peace and unity.

He emphasized that as a revered statesman, Kufuor’s voice carries significant weight and should be directed toward uniting the nation and strengthening its democratic foundations. “Note that…if a bird decides to eat on the ground, it becomes prey to the traps set on the ground”.

Meanwhile, Former President John Agyekum Kufuor clarified that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has neither appointed him as a spokesperson nor lobbied him to advocate on his behalf.

Addressing concerns about his recent remarks, Kufuor emphasized that his recommendation of Dr. Bawumia as the right choice for managing the country’s economy is entirely his personal conviction.

The former President explained that his endorsement is based on his independent assessment of the political landscape and his confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities.

He highlighted that his observations of the Vice President’s performance and potential have informed his position, which he believes is in the best interest of Ghana’s economic future.

Kufuor further maintained that his comments were driven by his desire to see effective leadership for the country rather than any external influence.

“Dr. Bawumia’s understanding of economics and his innovative policies have made him stand out. His leadership ideologies align with the aspirations of every Ghanaian. I firmly believe he has what it takes to elevate this country”.

Kufuor also emphasized the importance of the upcoming elections, encouraging citizens to participate actively by turning out in large numbers to make their voices count.

The former President passionately urged Ghanaians to rally behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the December elections, expressing his strong belief in Bawumia’s ability to lead the country toward growth and prosperity.
