Davido Hints At Veering Into Politics

Davido

Afrobeats star, Davido has revealed plans to release his fifth studio album next year.

The ‘Feel’ crooner confirmed that the much-anticipated album will drop “early 2025.”

However, he withheld further details about the project, including its exact release date, featured artists, and the album’s title.

The 32-year-old artist also shared exciting news about an upcoming collaborative project with Chike and Odumodublvck, slated for release in a few days.

Speaking about the collaboration, Davido referred to Odumodublvck as the “biggest Nigerian rapper” and likened Chike to American singer Bryson Tiller.

“We have another coming in a couple of days, it is called ‘Funds’. I featured the current biggest Nigerian rapper, Odumodublvck, and the Nigerian Bryson Tiller, girls love him his name is Chike.”

On his forthcoming album, Davido hinted at its unique African essence: “My album will be coming out early next year. It will be a real African record.”

The Afrobeats star also expressed his commitment to remaining in Nigeria, despite opportunities to relocate abroad. “I have to stay tapped in because why run away from home when others are running there now,” he added.

However, Davido revealed that his American counterparts Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj hold Africa in high regard.

According to him, both artists have a deep appreciation for the continent’s music and culture.

Davido shared that Brown and Minaj prefer incorporating Afrobeats into their collaborations with him rather than sticking to Western styles.

“My recent collaboration with Nicki Minaj, ‘If It’s Okay,’ has a lot of Afrobeats influence because she wanted full African flavor on it. These days, foreign artists want to do our musical styles, so it is easier for me to work with them. When we were recording ‘Sensational’ with Chris Brown, I was trying to make it American, but he insisted I include Afrobeats.

“He asked me to sing in Pidgin. My dancers were the video vixens in ‘Sensational.’ They even went on tour with Chris Brown. Chris Brown loves African culture, and Nicki does too.”

Chris Brown has collaborated with numerous African artists, including Davido, Wizkid, Rema, Fireboy, and Lojay. He has also toured with Ayra Starr and South Africa’s Tyla.

Nicki Minaj has worked with Mr. Eazi, Davido, and Skales.

Davido Alleges Plot to Cancel December Concert

Afrobeats star, Davido hinted that his much-anticipated December show in Nigeria is being threatened to be canceled following his controversial remarks about the country’s economy.

The singer made headlines after he advised Americans against relocating to Africa, particularly Nigeria.

Davido described the country’s economy as being in “shambles,” a statement that sparked a flurry of backlash from Nigerians at home and abroad.

Prominent figures like Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri publicly criticized the remarks, accusing the artist of tarnishing Nigeria’s image on a global platform.

Addressing the backlash, Davido defended his position by emphasizing the role of entertainers as the country’s “real ambassadors.”

Amid the ongoing uproar, Davido revealed another layer of the fallout, alleging threats to cancel his Lagos performance over his statement. “Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview…loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria,” he tweeted.

This will not be the first time Davido has clashed with government loyalists. During the 2020 Endsars protest, the singer revealed he was pressured to temporarily leave the country over his participation.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain, politician Joe Igbokwe advised Davido and suggested that plans to cancel his Lagos show after his recent interview were part of the consequence of his actions.

He also advised Davido to accept his mistake and apologize to Nigerians.

“Actions Carry Consequences. Accept your mistakes and apologize to Nigerians.”
