Mahama’s Presidency To Bring Back Mismanagement, Corruption

Lilian Ahedorby Lilian Ahedor
November 28, 2024
Reading Time: 4 mins read
President John Mahama's 120-day assessment.

President John Dramani Mahama

Evron Rothschild Hughes, a presidential staffer and economic adviser to the Vice President, stated that a Mahama presidency would be unrestrained, particularly in terms of fiscal policies and corrupt practices.

He further emphasized that constitutionally, Mahama would be unable to run for president again, even if he were to win the 2024 election in less than two weeks.

Hughes warned that Ghanaians could expect a resurgence of the same mismanagement, incompetence, and corruption that led to his removal from office twice.

He argued that Mahama has no incentive to act in the best interests of Ghanaians, as he believes he will never face another election and thus will never have to answer for his actions again.

“Mahama and the NDC have no plan to govern beyond hoping to win the election. Even before Mahama starts work, he is tired. He is asking for a honeymoon and making excuses. Hear him: ‘So we will beg you: when we come into office, give us a bit of a honeymoon’ [quoting Mahama].

“There is a reason for this. Even the most cursory of observers of both campaigns will not fail to come to the inescapable, undeniable conclusion that Mahama is stuck in the past, a ‘Yesterday’s Man’ who lacks ideas for moving Ghana forward into the future”.

Hughes stated that Mahama persistently attempts, though unsuccessfully, to mask his shortcomings with bravado, constantly crying “wolf” and resorting to insults whenever the pressure becomes too much to bear.“His favorite word is stupid”.

He remarked that when speaking with Ghanaians, particularly young people, they struggle to identify a single, transformative policy or platform from Mahama that could improve their lives.

He asserted that Mahama and his team have largely abandoned their “24-Hour Economy” slogan due to the confusion it causes both the speaker and the listener.

According to Hughes, Mahama himself seems unclear on its meaning, and his team has struggled to provide a coherent explanation.

The NPP stalwart pointed out that this failure is widespread as there is no single supporter or advocate of Mahama engaging in detailed discussions about policy issues, and there is a clear reason for this. “They have no solution to any of our challenges”.

He remarked that their primary goal is to win the election and swiftly pursue their interests before the four-year term expires, knowing they may never return.

Bawumia’s Clear, Bold Plan to Tackle Ghana’s Challenges

Evron Rothschild Hughes stated that, in contrast to Mahama, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia possesses clarity and a strong plan to address the most pressing challenges of our time.

According to him, the Vice President is committed to values-based, selfless leadership and bold solutions for jobs and business.

Hughes highlighted Bawumia’s systematic approach to identifying key issues and proposing practical solutions for each.

“From his plan to reduce the cost of living and secure the basics for all Ghanaians (holistic plans for ensuring food security; reducing the cost of public transportation; providing better options for access to housing;

“[Bawmia plans on] providing stable, affordable, reliable power for consumers; deepening the safety and security of communities and homes; and making government services easier to access: through his plan to create jobs and opportunities for the youth (designed to create about 4 million additional jobs – more on this later)”.

Hughes emphasized that the Vice President has comprehensive plans for a resilient, business-friendly economy focused on growth and job creation.

The NPP stalwart stated that these plans include significantly overhauling fiscal policy by cutting 3% of GDP from government expenditure.

The plan also involves establishing a U.S.-style Office of Management and Budget to oversee fiscal policy.

Hughes noted that this office would ensure the government budget aligns with key priorities.

Additionally, he indicated that the plan aims to ensure exchange rate stability through the Gold Purchase/Gold for Reserves Programme also also support the central bank in enforcing market rules.

He noted that the plan includes implementing Ghana’s first full and complete Tax Stimulus Programme. “Bawumia’s governing platform when elected President is the most thoughtful and extensive in recent public policy signaling in Ghana’s political history”.
