In an address filled with gratitude, optimism, and a commitment to unity, President-Elect and the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has delivered a rousing speech following his declaration as the winner of the 2024 presidential election by the Electoral Commission (EC).

 “This outcome can only be the doing of the Lord,” he affirmed. He acknowledged the emphatic mandate bestowed on him and the NDC by the Ghanaian people, describing it as one of the most decisive victories in the Fourth Republic.

John Mahama thanked Ghanaians both at home and abroad for their continued belief in democracy despite the challenges of recent years. He invoked the Psalms to emphasize his gratitude stating;

“I also give thanks to God for preparing a table before me in the presence of my enemies, and for anointing my head with oil and making my cup run over.”

The President-Elect disclosed that he had a cordial conversation with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during which they discussed the formation of a joint transitional team. He emphasized; “We agreed on an early inauguration of the joint transitional team as early as Wednesday, December 11th.”

He praised President Akufo-Addo for his cooperation and expressed his commitment to ensuring a seamless transfer of power in the best interest of the nation.

A significant highlight of John Mahama’s speech was his tribute to his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the first woman to be elected Vice President of Ghana. He extolled her for her decency, humility, and inspirational leadership.

“The eyes of every young girl and woman not only in Ghana but across the continent are going to be on you from today,” he said, emphasizing the historic nature of her election.

John Mahama extended heartfelt thanks to his wife, family, campaign team, and the leadership of the NDC, particularly Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, for their unwavering dedication.

He lauded the party’s grassroots members, volunteers, and agents who worked tirelessly to secure the victory. He added;

“To our council of elders, the gallant leadership of the National Democratic Congress, and all our members, I cannot thank you enough.’’

The President-Elect also commended Ghana’s institutions, including the Electoral Commission, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and election observers, for their roles in ensuring a credible and peaceful electoral process.

Despite the celebratory tone, John Mahama did not shy away from addressing the challenges facing the nation.

“The outgoing government has plunged our dear nation into an abyss. However, we are determined to work together with you to build the Ghana we want.”

“It must start with a reset of the relationship between citizens and elected officials,” he noted, adding that his administration would prioritize policies that serve the interests of all Ghanaians.

The President-Elect outlined a vision centered on inclusivity and economic opportunity. He pledged to create sustainable jobs, improve affordable housing, and provide better healthcare and clean water.

 He also introduced the concept of a “24-hour economy initiative” to drive productivity and economic growth.

“We want a Ghana that works for everybody and not just a few people. A Ghana that considers the well-being of all its citizens and affords them each the ability to live a life of dignity, a life of limitless opportunity.’’
