President-Elect John Dramani Mahama has strongly denounced post-election violence, urging Ghanaians to foster unity and calm during the transition to his administration.

In a national broadcast following widespread violence after Saturday, December 7, 2024 polls, President-Elect Mahama expressed profound gratitude to voters, calling the win a “moment of hope, unity, and opportunity” for Ghana.

However, he quickly addressed reports of violence targeting state offices and installations, describing these incidents as alarming. Mahama underscored the risks of instability during administrative transitions.

“I’ve received reports of attacks on state offices and installations. While it’s unclear who is behind these attacks, I condemn them in no uncertain terms. These acts must cease immediately.”

President-Elect Mahama acknowledged the frustrations of young Ghanaians and reiterated his earlier appeal for them to direct their energies toward constructive efforts rather than destructive actions.

“I urge the youth not to vent their frustration in criminal enterprise. Instead, they must channel their anger and frustration into the positive enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our beloved nation,” he said.  The President-Elect emphasized the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s democratic institutions and called for calm across the nation.

“I urge all our citizens to remain calm and avoid actions that could harm our institutions and our democracy. We have fought hard for change, and now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding the Ghana we want through unity and understanding”.

Demand for Decisive Action

The National Democratic Congress 2024 Presidential Candidate, in a fervent call to action, urged the current administration, which holds power until the official handover, to address the unrest promptly.

“Because state power is still in the hands of the present administration, I call on the president and the security agencies to act decisively to curb the ongoing acts of lawlessness immediately”.
