In the wake of Ghana’s general elections, the country has experienced a wave of post-election violence, prompting swift action by law enforcement agencies.

These incidents, ranging from arson to physical confrontations, have raised concerns about national stability and the need for stricter measures to ensure post-electoral peace.

The latest arrests involve 9 individuals linked to the arson attack on the Electoral Commission (EC) office at Ayensuano in the Eastern Region.

This incident is part of a series of violent disturbances that erupted in several regions following the elections.

“This arrest brings the total number of suspects so far arrested in connection with the post-election disturbances to 106, all of whom are currently undergoing due legal processes.”

However, investigators are working to determine the motivations behind these violent acts.

“All suspects are in custody assisting the Police investigation, and they will be made to face justice,” the statement read, reiterating the force’s determination to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The arrests form part of a broader crackdown on election-related violence across Ghana.

“We wish to once again assure the public that the Police and other security agencies are committed to the protection of our communities to maintain law and order.’’

Isolated incidents of unrest have historically accompanied election periods in Ghana, but the recent surge in violence has drawn significant public and international attention.

The attacks on EC offices, disputes over election results, and localized clashes have highlighted the need for post-election education and stricter security measures.

By apprehending suspects and ensuring they face legal consequences, the Police aim to deter future acts of unrest.

However, observers believe that the combined efforts of security agencies, the Electoral Commission, and political leaders in both the NDC and the NPP will be critical in restoring public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system.

Meanwhile, in an earlier disclosure issued by the Ghana Police Service and signed by Grace Ansah Akrofi, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Director of Public Affairs.

These incidents have prompted heightened efforts by security agencies to curb such acts and restore normalcy.

“So far, 89 suspects have been arrested in connection with various offenses during the electoral period. Of these, 40 are directly linked to acts of vandalism, looting, and the destruction of properties.”

The Ghana Police Service strongly cautioned the public against engaging in acts of violence or any form of unlawful activity.

“We would like to caution the public to desist from such acts of violence since the perpetrators will be arrested and taken through the due process of the law.”

Enhanced Security Measures

In an earlier response to the incidents, the Ghana Police Service outlined a series of enhanced security measures aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and property nationwide.

The Police Service is collaborating with other security agencies to increase visibility in communities, conducting joint patrols to reassure the public and deter potential offenders. Also, they are “conducting intelligence-led operations within communities to identify and arrest perpetrators”.

Another measure is the deployment of static security personnel at critical state facilities aims to prevent potential attacks and protect strategic assets.

Meanwhile, the Police Service is actively engaging government officials and other stakeholders through outreach efforts to foster cooperation and maintain peace.

“We would also like to thank the generality of all Ghanaians for their support throughout the process and urge all stakeholders to remain calm as we work to protect the lives and property of everyone.”

A dedicated special investigation team has been established to review video evidence, identify perpetrators, and ensure that justice is served.
