The Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed gratitude and humility following the party’s defeat in the polls, which resulted in a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing the nation and the party faithful in a statement, Dr. Prempeh, also known as “Napo,” acknowledged the voice of Ghanaians and pledged that the NPP would take the necessary steps to rebuild and reposition itself for the future.

“This was not the outcome we, in the NPP, envisaged; but we respect the verdict of the Ghanaian people.

“To Ghanaians, we have heard you clearly and with humility, we accept.”

For the NPP, the results marked an unexpected setback. Dr. Prempeh, in his statement, conveyed the party’s acceptance of the outcome with grace and emphasized the importance of respecting the democratic process.

Dr. Prempeh extended his gratitude to the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who served as Vice President from 2017 to 2025, for nominating him as the running mate in the 2024 elections.

He also acknowledged the overwhelming support he received from the NPP leadership, the party’s faithful, his campaign team, family, and friends. “I thank the Party faithfuls, my team, family, friends, and countless others for their confidence reposed in the ticket and for this enterprise,” he stated.

Dr. Prempeh’s nomination as the Vice-Presidential candidate was seen as a strategic move by the NPP, given his extensive experience in public service. As the Minister of Education from 2017 to 2021, he spearheaded significant reforms, including the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

The 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections were a decisive moment for Ghana, with the NDC emerging victorious in what was described as one of the most competitive in the lead up to the elections.

The NDC’s campaign, led by former President John Dramani Mahama, resonated with a significant portion of the electorate, leading to their return to power.

Commitment to NPP Ideals

Dr. Prempeh revealed that he had held extensive discussions with Dr. Bawumia to reflect on the reasons behind the NPP’s electoral loss.

He noted that, in due time, the party would undertake a broader review to identify the factors that led to the defeat.

“I believe in the NPP’s values, ideals, and traditions. As we go into a period of honest introspection and reflection on this electoral verdict, I am confident that we will emerge stronger.”

Dr. Prempeh’s optimism reflects the NPP’s resilience in the face of electoral defeats. The party has a history of rebounding from losses, as demonstrated by their return to power in 2016 after losing the 2008 and 2012 elections.

The 2024 elections were characterized by several factors, including economic challenges, youth unemployment, and debates over government policies. Analysts have suggested that these issues may have influenced voter behavior.

Additionally, the NDC’s campaign leveraged concerns about governance and proposed ambitious plans to address pressing national issues, which appealed to many voters.

He assured Ghanaians of the party’s commitment to working tirelessly to regain their trust and confidence. “We will work with you to get it right,” he affirmed.

Political analysts believe that the NPP’s path to recovery will require addressing the concerns of voters, particularly the youth and middle-class electorate. It will also involve strengthening party structures, fostering unity, and crafting a compelling vision for Ghana’s future.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s statement following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections highlights the party’s resilience and commitment to democratic principles.

While acknowledging the challenges ahead, he remained optimistic about the NPP’s ability to rebuild and reconnect with Ghanaians.

As Ghana transitions to a new administration under the NDC, the NPP’s journey of reflection and renewal will undoubtedly shape the country’s political landscape in the years to come.

With leaders like Dr. Prempeh at the forefront, the party is poised to learn from its experiences and continue contributing to Ghana’s development.
