Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Sworn in as Ghana’s First Female Vice President

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of Ghana

In a historic and momentous ceremony, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as the first female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana. 

The event, which took place at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra, marked a new chapter in Ghana’s democratic journey, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to gender inclusivity and leadership excellence.

The swearing-in ceremony was administered by the Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Esaaba Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

This solemn occasion saw Professor Opoku-Agyemang subscribe to the Oath of Allegiance and the Vice Presidential Oath, as stipulated by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. 

The Oath of Office

Chief Justice Sackey Torkornoo led Professor Opoku-Agyemang through the Oath of Allegiance.

“I, Professor Nana Jane, do in the name of the Almighty God swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Republic of Ghana, as by law established; that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of Ghana, and that I will preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. So help me God.”

Following this, the Chief Justice then administered the Vice Presidential Oath.

“I, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, having been elected to the office of Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, do in the name of the Almighty God swear that I will be faithful and truthful to the Republic of Ghana; that I will at all times preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana;

“And I dedicate myself to the service and well-being of the people of the Republic of Ghana and to do right to all manner of persons. I further solemnly swear that should I at any time break this oath of office, I shall submit myself to the laws of the Republic of Ghana and suffer the penalty for it. So help me God”.

Following the administration of the oaths, the Chief Justice congratulated Professor Opoku-Agyemang, formally affirming her elevation to the high office of Vice President.

To conclude the legal formalities, Professor Opoku-Agyemang signed the Oath of Office book, a symbolic act that cemented her commitment to uphold the Constitution and serve the people of Ghana with integrity and dedication. 

The event was conducted in the form of a parliamentary sitting, adhering to constitutional and parliamentary standing orders.

The ceremony was graced by an impressive assembly of dignitaries from across the globe, underscoring Ghana’s prominent role on the international stage. 

A total of 21 Heads of State from Africa and beyond were in attendance, along with three Vice Presidents, four former African leaders, and several Ministers of State from various countries. 

The diverse and high-profile presence of these leaders highlighted the global solidarity and respect Ghana commands within the international community.

The event also attracted members of the diplomatic corps, traditional rulers, representatives of civil society, and thousands of jubilant citizens, all eager to witness this historic moment

This historic moment is not only a significant milestone for Ghana but also a beacon of hope for gender equality and empowerment across Africa.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s ascension to the vice presidency serves as an inspiration to women and young girls across the continent, demonstrating that barriers can be broken with resilience, competence, and vision.

Her tenure is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives to Ghana’s governance, particularly in education, gender advocacy, and social policy—areas she has championed throughout her illustrious career.
