Mahama’s Speech Garners Praise for Emphasis on Economic Recovery, Governance Reform, Accountability

President John Dramani Mahama

The swearing-in of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as President and Her Excellency Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the first female Vice President has reignited hope for a more inclusive and equitable future.

As the nation celebrates this historic achievement, critical voices remind us that the fight for environmental justice and sustainable development remains a pressing issue.

The #FreetheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow movements have renewed their call to action, emphasizing the need for immediate and decisive steps against the scourge of illegal mining, or galamsey.

According to the groups, the election of President Mahama and Vice President Opoku-Agyemang presents a unique opportunity to address this menace with fresh vigor and resolve.

In their congratulatory press release, the organizers of #FreetheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow, underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive and uncompromising approach to tackle galamsey.

“While we celebrate this monumental achievement, we remain resolute in our commitment to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. Galamsey has wreaked havoc on our environment, destroyed livelihoods, polluted vital water sources, and endangered the future of our nation. This issue remains one of the most urgent challenges facing Ghana today.”

The groups called on the new administration to halt the activities of galamsey operators, restore all degraded lands, and protect the country’s polluted water bodies.

They urged the government to enact and enforce policies that permanently eradicate the menace and safeguard the environment for future generations, asserting that the onus lies on the new administration to demonstrate political will and adopt policies that go beyond rhetoric, ensuring lasting solutions to end this crisis.

Holding Leadership Accountable

The organizers of these movements affirmed their commitment to the fight against the activities of illegal mining, asserting that any delays or lapses in addressing this issue will be met with the full force of democratic activism.

“We stand ready to collaborate with the new administration and all stakeholders committed to eradicating galamsey and fostering a just, equitable, and sustainable future for Ghana. Our journey to safeguard our nation’s land, water, and dignity continues.”

This illicit activity has left a devastating imprint on Ghana’s environment, threatening livelihoods, polluting essential water sources, and jeopardizing the nation’s ecological and economic future.

Galamsey is no ordinary challenge. It is an environmental emergency with far-reaching consequences. Over the years, illegal mining has transformed lush forests into barren wastelands and turned once-pristine rivers into toxic streams of sludge.

Communities reliant on these water bodies for survival now face an existential crisis, grappling with water scarcity and health hazards. Farmers, whose livelihoods depend on fertile lands, have watched helplessly as their farms are destroyed.

Beyond its environmental toll, galamsey has also become a litmus test for governance and accountability in Ghana. Successive administrations have struggled to curtail its proliferation, often facing criticism for political interference, inadequate enforcement, and a lack of transparency.

Eradicating galamsey requires a collective effort that bridges partisan divides and unites all sectors of society. From civil society to local communities, every stakeholder must play a role in crafting and implementing sustainable solutions.

According to the groups. the fight against galamsey is not merely about stopping illegal mining; it is about envisioning a future where Ghana’s resources are managed responsibly and equitably.

The voices of the #FreetheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow movements serve as a clarion call to all Ghanaians: the fight for a sustainable, just, and equitable future is far from over.
