Concerns about the Ablekuma North violence have intensified, as the Minority in Parliament has strongly condemned the brutal attacks that marred the parliamentary rerun.
They argued that such violent tactics threaten Ghana’s constitutional order and stability, criticizing President Mahama for remaining silent while, as they put it, “members of his government celebrate violence against opposition figures.”
According to the Minority, this silence undermines the country’s democratic foundations and sends a dangerous message to both citizens and development partners.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the Minority Caucus, led by Hon. Korkor Laurette Asante, MP for Atiwa West, stressed that certain government officials have disqualified themselves from holding public office through what she described as “inflammatory and violent endorsing statements.”
She named Dr. Hannah Bissiw, the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, and Malik Basintale, CEO of the Youth Employment Agency, specifically, asserting that their continued roles in government imply tacit approval of political violence by the Mahama administration.
“President Mahama must choose. Does he stand with Ghana’s democratic institutions, or does he stand with officials who celebrate attacks on former members of Parliament?
“His decision will define his legacy and determine whether Ghana continues on the path of democratic governance or slides towards the normalization of political violence. The international community is watching. Ghana’s development partners are watching.”

Most importantly, she emphasized that the Ghanaian public is closely observing whether the President will choose to uphold democratic values or continue protecting individuals responsible for attacks against political parties, journalists, and ordinary citizens.
Outlining the Minority’s key demands, Hon. Asante called on President Mahama to act without delay.
She urged him to remove Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw from her role as CEO of the Minerals Development Fund and relieve Malik Basintali of his position as acting CEO of the Youth Employment Agency.
In her view, their endorsement and justification of violence against opposition members render them unfit to occupy any public office.
She argued that this decisive move would demonstrate that the government does not condone political violence.
The Minority further called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of everyone directly connected to the violence in Ablekuma North.
Hon. Asante emphasized that law enforcement authorities must ensure all perpetrators face full legal consequences, while also providing the public with regular daily updates on the progress of investigations and arrests. “There can be no impunity for those who attack a democratic process.”
Police Urged To Probe Ablekuma North Violence
Hon. Korkor Laurette Asante also urged the Ghana Police Service to conduct a comprehensive internal investigation into potential security lapses related to the incident.
She highlighted the need to examine the involvement of Chief Superintendent Lumor Frederick Senanu.
According to her, any officers proven to have played a role in the Ablekuma North violence should be dismissed without delay and subjected to criminal prosecution.
According to the Minority, President Mahama must publicly address the issue, not only condemning the violence but also apologizing directly to the victims, including Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, Nana Akua Afriyie, and others.
They insisted that this statement must be, in her words, “unequivocal and without any qualification or justification for the violence.”
“Do not allow these acts of intimidation to silence your voice. Your vote is your power, and you must exercise it without fear. Ghana’s democracy depends on your courage to stand up to those who would steal your constitutional rights through violence.”

The Minority extended a call to civil society organizations, journalists, and democratic defenders, urging them to demand accountability from the administration.
She made it clear that remaining silent was no longer an option. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, she warned that Ghana’s democratic stability was at serious risk, calling for immediate and decisive action to safeguard it.
Accordingly, Hon. Asante affirmed that the Minority Caucus is committed to using all constitutional means available to hold the current government accountable and to guarantee that justice is ultimately achieved.
She warned that “we will not rest until Ghana’s democracy is secure from those who would destroy it through violence and intimidation.”
She added that the Minority will monitor every decision and inaction by the government, holding them accountable to Ghanaians.
“The international community must also take note of these developments. Ghana’s status as a beacon of democracy in West Africa hangs in the balance.
“We will call on our development partners, the African Union, ECOWAS, to closely monitor the Muhammad administration’s response to this crisis and take appropriate action if democratic norms continue to be violated.”

Hon. Asante gave a strong call to action, urging every Ghanaian citizen to reject all forms of violence and recommit themselves to the democratic principles that have long positioned Ghana as a symbol of hope in West Africa.
She emphasized that the nation now faces a critical decision point: to follow the path of democratic governance, where acts of violence are condemned and offenders are held responsible, or to descend into political disorder, where violent acts against opposition members are normalized and even encouraged by government officials.
“We stand firmly with democracy, with the rule of law, and with the constitutional order that has served our nation well. We will defend these principles with unwavering determination until justice prevails and democratic governance is restored.”

Addressing her concluding remarks directly to President Mahama, Hon. Asante emphasized that the responsibility now rests with him to make a decisive choice concerning the Ablekuma North violence.
She highlighted that his response will be a defining moment in his leadership, shaping both his legacy and the trajectory of Ghana’s democracy.
The future stability and democratic integrity of the nation, she noted, depend heavily on the actions he chooses to take. “Choose wisely…”
