In a landmark agreement set to redefine maritime transportation in Nigeria and the broader West African region, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Shipping, Stena Bulk, and Caverton Marine Limited have announced a strategic joint venture aimed at revolutionizing oil and gas shipping logistics.

The partnership, formalized last week in London, seeks to establish a world-class tanker operation catering to Nigeria’s crude oil, refined petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping requirements.

This joint venture aligns with NNPC’s broader mission to modernize the country’s maritime infrastructure and enhance its global energy logistics capabilities.

The newly formed company will not only serve NNPC’s logistical needs but will also offer its services to other oil producers and traders, leveraging its strategic location, modern fleet, and robust financial backing.

Panos Gliatis, Managing Director of NNPC Shipping said, “This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in NNPC’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure.”

“By combining our expertise with Stena Bulk and Caverton Marine, we are creating a robust platform that will enhance our domestic refining, import, and export capabilities while strengthening Nigeria’s position in global energy logistics.”

A core objective of this joint venture is to develop a highly efficient fleet of tankers, comprising both new and existing vessels, based on prevailing market factors and commercial opportunities.

The partners will assess various options for vessel acquisition and long-term charter arrangements while ensuring competitive operating costs.

Industry experts believe that this initiative will significantly enhance Nigeria’s shipping efficiency, reduce dependency on foreign-owned vessels, and contribute to long-term economic sustainability.

With a modern and well-equipped fleet, the new company is poised to offer high-quality, reliable, and efficient maritime transport services that meet international safety and sustainability standards.

Stena Bulk, one of the world’s leading tanker shipping companies, is bringing its extensive global experience and operational excellence to the partnership.

Headquartered in Sweden, the company has a fleet of approximately 70 vessels and operates in key energy markets worldwide. Stena Bulk’s President and CEO, Erik Hånell, emphasized the significance of this partnership.

“This collaboration aligns perfectly with our pragmatic strategy of expanding our presence in key growth markets while maintaining our high standards of operational excellence and sustainability.

“Nigeria’s energy sector is undergoing remarkable transformation, and we’re proud to be part of this journey.”

Caverton Marine Limited, a subsidiary of Caverton Offshore Support Group, has deep-rooted expertise in Nigeria’s maritime sector, offering integrated offshore support services to oil and gas companies across Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Bode Makanjuola, CEO of Caverton Offshore Support Group, described the joint venture as “a result of many years of planning, marking a significant stride in enhancing Nigeria’s maritime capabilities.”

“By combining local knowledge with international best practices, we are establishing a world-class operation that will benefit not only Nigeria but the entire Sub-Saharan Africa region.”

This joint venture arrives at a pivotal moment for Nigeria, which remains Africa’s largest economy and a key player in the continent’s energy market.

The country’s strategic geographic position, growing population, and ongoing infrastructure developments provide immense opportunities for expanding its maritime and energy logistics sector.

The joint venture is expected to support Nigeria’s long-term economic diversification goals, reduce the cost of shipping petroleum products, and improve overall efficiency in the oil and gas sector.

Additionally, with Nigeria’s renewed focus on local content development, the initiative will create employment opportunities and build indigenous capacity in the maritime industry. Johan Jäwert, Head of Stena Bulk USA, expressed confidence in the collaboration’s success.

“We look forward to developing shipping activities locally with Caverton and benefiting from NNPC’s strong position in the oil market.

“Combined with our know-how across all aspects of commercial and technical shipping, we will create a world-leading shipping company providing first-class service to the energy market.”

The NNPC Shipping-Stena Bulk-Caverton Marine joint venture represents a strategic step toward modernizing Nigeria’s maritime industry and optimizing its oil and gas logistics.

By creating a state-of-the-art tanker operation, the partnership aims to drive efficiency, reduce costs, and establish Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in Africa.

With a focus on sustainability, safety, and operational excellence, this collaboration is set to create long-term value for Nigeria’s economy, enhance global trade relations, and reinforce the country’s energy sector for years to come.
