GFA commits to transparency

GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed its appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering passion for Ghanaian football, particularly the Black Stars.

The association, in a statement, pledged its commitment to ensuring transparency in the management of sports funds, aligning with the President’s recent call for openness in government spending on sports.

This statement came in response to President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, where he stressed the need for accountability in the use of public funds allocated to sports.

The President’s remarks have reignited discussions on the necessity of financial prudence and openness in the management of sports resources, particularly in relation to the performance and funding of national teams.

The GFA acknowledged the President’s remarks regarding the Black Stars’ recent struggles, particularly their failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

However, the association noted that this setback should not be seen as an indication of a decline in the country’s footballing potential.

Instead, it called for renewed efforts to strengthen the team and ensure its competitiveness on the international stage. “It is some comfort that Ghana sits at the joint top of our World Cup qualifying group at the moment.”

The association assured the public that concrete measures have been put in place to strengthen the management and technical team of the Black Stars.

These interventions, the GFA noted, are expected to yield positive results in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March and beyond.

Additionally, the association emphasized the importance of long-term investments in grassroots football development to secure the future of the sport in Ghana.

Commitment To Transparency

Furthermore, the GFA reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and emphasized that all budgeting and expenditure concerning the Black Stars are managed by the Ministry of Sports.

The association clarified its role in the financial process, distancing itself from direct control over funds while underscoring its commitment to accountability.

“Indeed, as part of our commitment to transparency, the GFA has always provided the Ministry responsible for Sports with the first draft budget for the national teams.

Beyond this, everything to do with the budgeting and expenditure related to the Black Stars sits with the Ministry. For emphasis, payments made in relation to the Black Stars are exclusively handled by the Ministry.”

Ghana Football Association (GFA)

The association assured its full cooperation with the Ministry to enhance accountability in sports administration.

It pledged to support the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in implementing President Mahama’s call for transparency.

The GFA also expressed hope that improved financial oversight would boost public confidence in the management of sports funds and ensure that resources are directed toward the development of football infrastructure, player welfare, and national team success.

Additionally, the association highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, and football stakeholders in achieving sustainable progress.

It urged corporate bodies and sponsors to continue supporting the development of football in Ghana, emphasizing that transparency in financial dealings would encourage greater investment in the sport.

The GFA further stated that the President’s passion for Ghanaian football serves as a motivating factor to improve the sport and bring the aspirations of Ghanaians to fruition.

“We are energized by the President’s passion and look forward to working with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to actualize the dreams and aspirations of all Ghanaians.”

Ghana Football Association (GFA)

As Ghana gears up for its upcoming international fixtures, the association remains hopeful that its efforts will contribute to a resurgence of the national team’s success on the global stage.

The GFA also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the Black Stars are given the necessary support to perform at their best, while also advocating for policies that will enhance the overall state of Ghanaian football.
