The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has held distinguished meetings with the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator, H.E. Charles Abani.

These engagements reinforced Ghana’s diplomatic priorities in economic growth, security, and international cooperation.

The visit by the British High Commissioner reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s long-standing relationship with Ghana.

During the meeting, H.E. Harriet Thompson emphasized the UK’s commitment to sustaining its diplomatic and economic ties with Ghana, despite reductions in its Official Development Assistance budget.

She reassured the Minister that ongoing bilateral agreements would remain unaffected and that both nations had much to gain from continued collaboration.

She further indicated that there were opportunities for the two Foreign Ministries to collaborate on technical matters, ensuring that diplomatic engagements yield tangible benefits for both countries.

While acknowledging economic challenges on a global scale, she reiterated the UK’s readiness to support Ghana in strategic areas, including governance, security, and development.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, in response, welcomed the UK’s continued support and acknowledged the economic uncertainties facing Ghana and other developing nations.

He reiterated that economic growth remains a top priority for the government, requiring strengthened international partnerships.

As part of Ghana’s ongoing economic diplomacy efforts, the Minister disclosed that the government would soon approach the UK to initiate discussions on a Labour Export Agreement.

This move is expected to create new employment opportunities for Ghanaians while providing a structured framework for labour migration between the two countries.

Additionally, the Minister expressed gratitude to the UK for its contributions in areas such as counter-terrorism, defence, security, and human rights.

These collaborations, he emphasized, have been instrumental in advancing Ghana’s national security objectives.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to further deepening the already strong relations between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

Developmental Partnership With The UN

Ghana’s commitment to deepening diplomatic relations with its global partners was once again demonstrated when Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa also engaged the United Nations Resident Coordinator, H.E. Charles Abani.

This was in a bilateral meeting to assess the UN’s ongoing programmes in Ghana.

The meeting underscored the crucial role of the United Nations in supporting Ghana’s developmental priorities across multiple sectors.

H.E. Charles Abani highlighted the excellent relationship between Ghana and the various UN agencies, commending the country’s efforts in governance, security, and socio-economic development.

He provided an overview of the UN’s ongoing projects in areas such as migration, security, and education, reaffirming the commitment of the international body to Ghana’s national priorities.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, in response, acknowledged the UN’s invaluable contributions, particularly in promoting good governance, economic development, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience.

He noted that the government remains committed to leveraging its partnership with the UN to accelerate progress in these key areas.

Additionally, the Minister extended his personal gratitude to H.E. Charles Abani for the UN’s support during the 2024 floods that devastated parts of the Volta Region, including his own constituency.

He commended the prompt humanitarian assistance provided to affected communities and assured the Resident Coordinator of Ghana’s continued cooperation with the UN.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their dedication to strengthening the partnership between Ghana and the United Nations.

The Minister emphasized that his tenure would prioritize ensuring that Ghana’s engagement with international organizations yields concrete developmental outcomes for the country.

Diplomacy At The Forefront

Both meetings reflect Ghana’s proactive approach to diplomacy, leveraging international cooperation to address domestic challenges and foster development.

The engagements with the UK and the UN align with the government’s broader agenda of economic diplomacy, ensuring that diplomatic relations translate into meaningful economic benefits.

As Ghana marks its 68th Independence Month, these high-level diplomatic interactions reinforce the country’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships.

Whether in deepening economic ties with the United Kingdom or working with the United Nations on developmental projects, Ghana continues to position itself as a proactive player on the global stage.

Under the leadership of Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains focused on ensuring that Ghana’s diplomatic engagements contribute to the country’s long-term growth and stability.
