The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Jinapor, has assured the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and residents of the Ashanti Region that the government is taking significant steps to stabilise electricity supply and address persistent power challenges.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace as part of his working visit to the region, Hon. Jinapor detailed the government’s ongoing interventions to improve power distribution and reliability.

“The electricity demand has been increasing, and the existing infrastructure was unable to keep up.

“With the completion of this new 145MVA transformer, we expect a remarkable improvement in power delivery.”

The installation is part of broader efforts to modernize Ghana’s electricity infrastructure and ensure long-term energy security. The Minister also inspected several ongoing projects, including the construction of power plants and transmission upgrades.

Hon. Jinapor acknowledged the recent power rationing (load shedding), which affected businesses and households.

He revealed that at its peak in December 2024, Ghana experienced up to 750 megawatts of load shedding, but the situation has since improved significantly.

“We have managed to stabilise the power supply situation, and Ghana is now exporting excess electricity to neighboring countries.”

Despite this progress, the Minister admitted that more work is needed to ensure a fully stable and uninterrupted power supply.

He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach that includes power generation, transmission, and distribution to sustain long-term stability.

“We are working around the clock to resolve these challenges and guarantee a reliable power supply.

“Beyond generating enough power, we need to effectively transmit and distribute it to consumers.”

To minimize inconvenience during maintenance or emergency power switches, Hon. Jinapor urged power providers in the Ashanti Region, particularly GRIDCo and ECG, to improve communication with consumers.

“Consumers deserve to be informed in advance of any scheduled maintenance or power interruptions. Clear communication will help reduce panic and frustration.”

The Minister hinted at ambitious plans to position Kumasi as a key power generation hub in Ghana.

He disclosed that multiple power plants are expected to become operational in the coming years, potentially contributing up to 500 megawatts of electricity from the Ashanti Region alone.

According to him, these investments align with the government’s broader energy strategy to boost national electricity generation capacity, reduce reliance on expensive emergency power solutions, and support industrial growth.

Expressing gratitude for the swift intervention in the Ashanti Region’s power challenges, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II commended the Minister and his team for prioritizing the region’s electricity needs.

“I appreciate the efforts being made to stabilise power in Kumasi and the Ashanti Region. Reliable electricity is critical for economic growth and the well-being of our people.”

He further pledged his support to the government’s initiatives aimed at improving energy infrastructure in the region.

Hon. Jinapor further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving Ghana’s energy challenges and ensuring that both residential and industrial users benefit from stable electricity.

“We are determined to make the necessary investments and reforms to secure Ghana’s energy future.

“The Ashanti Region will play a critical role in our long-term energy strategy.”

Hon. John Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition

The Minister was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Energy, the Volta River Authority (VRA), GRIDCo, and ECG, reflecting a multi-agency commitment to addressing Ghana’s energy challenges.

With the government’s focus on infrastructure development, strategic investments, and stakeholder collaboration, there is renewed optimism that power reliability will improve for residents and businesses in Kumasi and beyond.
