Tyla Discusses Controversy Over Previous ‘Coloured’ Identity Statement

Tyla

Tyla has announced that she would be exploring a new sound which is a shift from the one she introduced in her debut album ‘TYLA’.

Her sophomore album will still have some elements of her original sound, however with the change she has experienced with her newfound fame, Tyla said it will be different.

“New album. I’ve changed a lot in a short amount of time because I was kind of forced to with how fast I had to adapt to everything. I don’t think it’s going to be the same energy [as Tyla] at all, especially with what I’ve started making. It’s different, but also still Tyla.”

Tyla

Her fanpage, @chartstyla shared the news on X and sparked a wave of different reactions.

The “pretty girl from Joburg” also said she found her shows in South Africa the most impactful.

“I haven’t really done much there since everything has happened. Those were the biggest headlining shows I’ve ever had. It was fun being able to have that much control over the stage, the dancing, the lighting, the song arrangements. It was really cool to create something from scratch and give home a whole show that I’ve never been able to give them.”

Her first project placed her in the spotlight and has helped her scoop numerous accolades. Her smash hit ‘Water’ was the very first song by a solo artist in Mzansi to make the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years.

She also won a Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024.

Tyla then went on to win even more awards including an MTV Video Music Award for Best Afrobeats Video, a Billboard Music Award for Top Afrobeats Artist, as well as a BET Award for Best New Artist.

Just recently, the ‘Water’ crooner was crowned the World Artist of the Year at the iHeartRadio Music Awards.

Peeps debated what the musician’s new sound would be like.

“I bet she will focus more now on Afrobeats, it is the only genre that gave her a platform.”

“She’s definitely going more Pop.”

“She should do house infused amapiano next, like think water but produced by kaytranada/disclosure.”

Tyla Reveals Her Biggest Musical Influences

The Grammy-winning artist revealed that Nigerian R&B star Tems is one of her biggest musical influences in recent times.

The South African Afrobeats star said Tems’ achievements have significantly shaped her artistic journey. “Tems is a big one. What she’s been able to do has been very inspiring,” she said.

Tyla also cited Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, and Aaliyah as other key influences on her music and performance style.

On how vocal she has been while winning Afrobeats awards, she noted that, “It’s still an honor because I do use Afrobeats’ influence in my music,” she said.

“I represent Africa as a whole. Genre is so fluid, so it’s become difficult to categorize it. If people see it as the influence that the artist is using in their music getting its recognition, it’ll help more [with perceptions], rather than being like, ‘This person is not that’.”

Tyla

Tyla isn’t just pushing the envelope when it comes to music. The “PUSH 2 START” singer-songwriter is also making waves in the fashion space, from her recent tweed look at the fall/winter 2025 Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week to consistently captivating on-stage outfits that reflect her infectious energy.

If there’s anyone who masters the art of seductive, rock-‘n’-roll chic, feminine style, it’s her.
