GAF to receive essentials

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is set to receive a significant boost today, 27th March 2025, as the Minister of Defense, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has announced a major donation of essential food supplies.

This comes as part of a broader effort to resolve the food crisis that has plagued the armed forces due to outstanding debts owed to suppliers.

Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized that his immediate intervention was necessary to alleviate the hardship within the GAF.

“This morning, I’ll be donating one thousand bags of rice, thousands of mackerel tin fish, thousands of tin tomatoes, and thousands of cooking oil to the Ghana Armed Forces.”

He explained that this donation is the first phase of a three-pronged approach aimed at addressing the acute food crisis inherited by the current administration.

According to him, a major contributor to the crisis is the massive GH¢275 million debt owed to food suppliers by the government.

The second phase of this plan, as outlined by Dr. Omane Boamah, focuses on ensuring that the government remains up to date on its financial commitments to the GAF.

“This massive donation will be followed by the government being current on financial obligations while settling the GH¢275 million owed to food suppliers over time.”

Accordingly, The Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to addressing the matter, emphasizing that the Finance Ministry is actively working toward a resolution.

He disclosed that the Finance Minister has given a firm assurance that the proposed payment plan will be implemented immediately after Parliament approves the 2025 Budget figures under the Appropriation Act.

He further highlighted that this commitment is crucial in maintaining fiscal discipline, restoring confidence among stakeholders, and ensuring that financial obligations are met without unnecessary delays.

According to him, the government’s focus is on stabilizing the economy and fostering sustainable financial management to prevent similar challenges in the future.

The Minister also urged all relevant parties to exercise patience as the government follows due process to secure the necessary parliamentary approvals.

He expressed optimism that once the budget is approved, the payment plan will be executed efficiently, helping to resolve the outstanding issues in a structured and transparent manner.

Mechanized Farming to Boost Military Food Security

Beyond providing immediate food relief and addressing outstanding debts, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah detailed a comprehensive long-term strategy aimed at preventing similar crises in the future.

As part of this third phase, the government plans to collaborate with the private sector to introduce large-scale mechanized agricultural initiatives.

This initiative, the Defense Minister noted, will equip the Ghana Armed Forces with the resources and infrastructure needed to cultivate and produce a significant portion of their own food supply.

“With this third strategy to feed ourselves, we shall reduce the food bill on government, feed our officers and soldiers well, and contribute to managing food inflation.”

Accordingly, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized that these initiatives are not just short-term interventions but part of a larger, strategic effort to revitalize and fortify the Ghana Armed Forces.

He underscored the importance of restoring the institution’s stability, efficiency, and self-sufficiency, ensuring that it remains a formidable pillar of national security.

From addressing immediate concerns like food security and debt relief to implementing long-term solutions such as mechanized agriculture, the overarching goal is to create a well-equipped, resilient, and self-sustaining military force.

Dr. Boamah passionately articulated this vision, stating, “We’re resetting the Ghana Armed Forces!”

Meanwhile, the transition in military leadership has also been a key focus.

On Monday, March 24, 2025, a farewell and handover ceremony was held for the outgoing Chief of Defense Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and other retiring service chiefs.

The new Military High Command, now led by Major General William Agyapong, has officially taken over, bringing with them fresh energy and renewed commitment to build on the achievements of their predecessors.

Dr. Omane Boamah’s decisive intervention in addressing the food crisis within the armed forces is being viewed as a critical step toward ensuring the welfare of Ghana’s military personnel.

His structured approach, combining immediate relief with long-term sustainability, is expected to bring much-needed stability to the supply chain that feeds the nation’s soldiers.
