Ghana’s top military leadership have reaffirmed their loyalty to President John Dramani Mahama during a high-profile meeting at the presidency after the swearing in of the country’s security chiefs.

The delegation, led by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major General William Agyapong, included the heads of the Ghana Army, Navy, and Air Force, Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, along with other senior officers.

“We have come here today, first and foremost, to congratulate His Excellency on the success he chalked during the recent election and his assumption of office as the President of the Republic of Ghana and the Commander-in-Chief”

Commitment to Military Welfare

The CDS expressed gratitude for the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel.

He highlighted the significance of promotions, resource allocation, and strategic investments in enhancing the effectiveness of the armed forces.

“We also want to thank you most sincerely for the appointments that you have offered us, and also for the promotions to the ranks of two-star generals.

“We are indeed very grateful. We see this as a testament to the trust and confidence that you have in us, and we want to assure you that we will live up to that expectation”

Drawing on military strategy, Major General Agyapong referenced Carl von Clausewitz’s concept of “fighting power,” noting that President Mahama’s policies aligned with the necessary “moral,” “physical,” and leadership components that define a strong military force.

“We think that as a team, we are on course and we’ll be doing this so that we are able to help you in resetting the Ghana Armed Forces in line with the broader vision of the resetting Ghana agenda”

Challenges Acknowledged

Despite these advancements, the military leadership acknowledged the significant challenges facing the armed forces.

“We are not oblivious of the challenges ahead. We are aware that it will require tough decisions, but we are inspired by the fact that you have assured us that you will give us the backing that we need to be able to do all these”

Major General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff

Major General Agyapong reaffirmed the military’s readiness to tackle security threats with professionalism, strategic decision making, and commitment, and required unwavering support from the government.

The discussion also touched on the broader vision for the Ghana Armed Forces, aligning military reforms with the national development agenda.

“Finally, we want to reaffirm to you our unflinching loyalty to the constitution, to the state, and to you, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, and to reassure you that under your guidance, we’ll provide the right leadership that we need”

The CDS assured President Mahama that the military was committed to providing the leadership necessary to secure the country’s territorial integrity, pledging to work collaboratively with the government.

They assured the president that they would uphold their duties with integrity, discipline, and dedication to national service.

The military’s reaffirmation of loyalty comes at a crucial time when Ghana is reinforcing its defense posture amid concerns over regional instability.

The government’s appointment of new security chiefs has been viewed as a strategic move to bolster national security and enhance Ghana’s role in regional peacekeeping efforts.

The meeting between the president, military leaders and other security chiefs reinforced the mutual trust and cooperation necessary for national defense moving forward.

As the Ghana Armed Forces navigate the evolving security landscape, the assurances given by the CDS and service chiefs highlighted the readiness of the military to uphold its constitutional mandate under President Mahama’s leadership.
