The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, has called on the general public to support ongoing investigations into the disappearance of containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Addressing the media, Dr. Srem Sai emphasized the need for transparency and public cooperation in ensuring that justice is served.

He assured Ghanaians that the government is committed to recovering the stolen assets and prosecuting those responsible while respecting the rights of all suspects.

“The Ghana Police Service has arrested several suspects. The arrests took place in Dongfang, the manufacturing company YAD, and Pon Loc, all around Shill Hills. Fourteen suspects have been arrested, and 11 have identified themselves as Chinese nationals.”

According to the Deputy Attorney General, the law enforcement officials, since the late arrests, have admitted the suspects to police bail in line with legal provisions. Dr. Srem Sai stressed that the government’s approach to the case will be fair and lawful.

“As you know, we have always maintained, and President John Mahama has also maintained, that his fight to recover the loot will not be a channel or a tool to abuse the rights of persons who are suspected of wrongdoing”.

As part of the bail conditions, the police have confiscated the passports of all 14 suspects to prevent them from leaving the country.

Additionally, they are required to produce sureties—individuals who can vouch for them and assist the authorities in locating them if necessary.

These measures, according to Dr Srem Sai, are aimed at ensuring that the suspects remain within the jurisdiction while investigations continue.

Ongoing Investigations and Suspected Syndicate

Dr. Srem Sai highlighted that preliminary investigations indicate the missing ECG containers may be the work of a well-organized syndicate.

The suspects currently in custody have provided statements and leads, which law enforcement officials believe will assist in unearthing more members of the group.

“We believe that this is a syndicate, and there are more people in the network that the police are working to apprehend. Investigations are ongoing, and we will not rest until every person connected to this crime is brought to book”.

Given the potential scale of the crime, the police are intensifying efforts to track down additional individuals who may be involved.

Authorities are urging members of the public to provide information that could help in identifying and prosecuting other culprits.

The Deputy Attorney General made a passionate appeal to the general public to assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“We want to encourage the general public to volunteer information leading to the arrest or conviction of this crime against the republic”.

Millions of Ghana cedis have been lost due to the missing ECG containers, and the government is determined to recover the stolen assets.

Dr. Srem Sai reaffirmed the readiness of law enforcement agencies, including the office of the Attorney General, to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.

“It is a country that is losing so much, and we expect that people will come forward with any relevant information. Any information that anyone has should be made available to the leaders of the investigation”.

The case of the missing ECG containers has sparked widespread concern, given the financial loss involved.

Many Ghanaians are demanding answers and accountability from those responsible. With suspicions of a larger criminal syndicate at play, there is a renewed focus on the need for better oversight and security in the handling of critical state assets.

Dr. Srem Sai’s call for public support underscores the importance of collective vigilance in the fight against corruption and organized crime.

The ECG scandal is just one of many cases where state resources have been misappropriated, and the government’s ability to track down and prosecute offenders will be a test of its commitment to good governance and accountability.

While the arrests mark a significant step in the pursuit of justice, the ultimate goal remains the full recovery of the stolen ECG containers and the dismantling of any criminal syndicates behind their disappearance.
