Number Of Journalists Killed In Gaza Rises To 210

Palestinian journalists gather in front of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital to commemorate their friends who lost their lives in an Israeli army attack on a moving vehicle in the Shati refugee camp, in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza, on July 31, 2024

Gaza’s Government Media Office has announced the number of journalists killed in Israeli attacks on the territory since October 2023 has risen to 210 after Palestinian Journalist, Helmi al-Faqawi was killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent used by local media in southern Gaza.

Al-Faqawi was among at least two people killed when Israeli warplanes bombed a tent for journalists near Nasser hospital in Khan Younis early on Monday, April 7, 2025.

Palestinian medics disclosed that nine people, including six reporters, were injured.

In a statement posted to Telegram, Gaza’s government media office condemned in the “strongest terms” the targeting, killing and assassination of Palestinian journalists by the “Israeli occupation.”

“We hold the “Israeli” occupation, the American administration, and the countries participating in the crime of genocide, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. We hold them fully responsible for committing this heinous and brutal crime.

“We call on the international community, international organizations, and organizations involved in journalism and media work in all countries of the world to condemn the crimes of the occupation, deter it, and prosecute it in international courts for its ongoing crimes, and bring the criminals of the occupation to justice. We also call on them to exert serious and effective pressure to stop the crime of genocide, to protect journalists and media professionals in the Gaza Strip, and to stop the crime of killing and assassinating them.”

In a report published on April 1, 2025, the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs said Israel’s war on Gaza has been the deadliest for media workers ever recorded and that Israeli forces had killed 232 journalists since October 7, 2023.

That means more journalists have been killed in Gaza than in both world wars, the Vietnam War, the wars in Yugoslavia and the US war in Afghanistan combined.

At least 57 people have been killed in Gaza in the past 24 hours and 137 injured, Gaza’s Government Media Office has said in its latest update.

Since Israel resumed attacks on Gaza on March 18, the death toll has reached 1,391, while 3,434 were injured.

The overall number of casualties since October 7, 2023 now stands at 50,752 killed and 115,475 injured.

Deliberate Targeting Of Journalists

Number Of Journalists Killed In Gaza Rises To 210
Journalists gather in front of Nasser hospital in Khan Younis to protest against the targeting of their colleagues in airstrikes by the Israeli military.

Journalist and Author Antony Lowenstein has told a news agency that Israel has been targeting journalists in the occupied Palestinian territory with more intensity since October 7, 2023.

Citing a study by Brown University’s Cost of War project, Lowenstein said that the number of journalists killed in Gaza is greater than that of all conflicts in the last 100 years combined.

He added that the figures pointed to a “deliberate targeting of journalists.”

He noted that among Western countries, “there is far more interest if China, Russia and Iran target journalists but far less if Israel does.”

“The lack of international outrage speaks volumes about how suddenly the press have a hierarchy of who is important, and Palestinians are not top of that list.”

Antony Lowenstein

Also, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the Israeli strike near Nasser Hospital that burned Helmi al-Faqawi alive.

It said in a statement that Israel committed a “horrific and heinous massacre against journalists who were sheltering in a tent in the courtyard of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.”

The syndicate called for the International Criminal Court to swiftly initiate proceedings and for the UN Security Council to take swift action.
