The recent outbreak of violence in Bawku, Upper East Region, has drawn swift and decisive action from the Ghana Police Service (GPS).

According to a statement by the Ghana Police Service, on April 10, 2025, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, led a team of officers, including those from operations, investigation, and intelligence, to the heart of the unrest to assess the security situation first-hand.

Bawku, which has long been troubled by ethnic and communal tensions, saw a dangerous escalation on April 9, 2025, when violent clashes broke out between local youth and police officers.

“One person, Fuseini Iddrisu, unfortunately lost his life during the incident. Five other persons, including one Police officer and one Immigration officer, sustained gunshot injuries and are on admission receiving medical attention.”

The violence did not just claim lives and cause injuries; it also led to significant damage.

According to the GPS, “Some properties belonging to the police, including two vehicles and a rented police accommodation at Binduri, as well as houses of some of the Police officers, were damaged.”

These losses further highlight the severity of the clashes and the ongoing volatility in the area.

To address this dire situation, the police, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), have launched joint patrols in Bawku and its surrounding communities.

The intensified security presence is aimed at stabilizing the area and ensuring that such violence does not spiral further out of control.

The Ghana Police Service has promised that these efforts will continue for the foreseeable future, with the full force of the law brought to bear.

While the immediate response has been focused on restoring peace, the IGP’s visit to Bawku is also about showing solidarity.

Mr. Yohuno and his team are not just there to oversee the security situation—they are there to offer condolences and support to those directly affected.

The police statement indicated that during their visit, the IGP and his team would “commiserate with the deceased family, visit the injured persons on admission, and reach out to officers who lost their properties as a result of the violence.”

Bawku Violence Highlights Fragile Security Situation

The situation in Bawku serves as a stark reminder of the tensions that have simmered in the region for years.

While the government and security agencies have worked tirelessly to manage and contain the volatile situation, incidents like these expose the vulnerability of the area.

It is clear that despite the best efforts of both the police and the military, peace in Bawku remains fragile, and further intervention may be necessary to ensure stability in the long term.

The police have assured the public that they will continue to work to maintain order in Bawku.

“We would like to assure the public that the Ghana Police Service will continue to work with the Ghana Armed Forces, chiefs, opinion leaders, and all other stakeholders to ensure security, law, and order at Bawku.”

This collective effort between security forces and community leaders is crucial for ensuring that such violence does not become a recurring issue.

As security forces continue their patrols, it is vital that attention is also given to the underlying issues that lead to these confrontations.

The events of April 9 in Bawku are a stark reminder of the delicate balance between security and freedom in Ghana.

While the authorities must maintain order, they must also ensure that they do not trample on the rights of the people they are meant to protect.

As the situation in Bawku continues to develop, it is important for the public to remain calm and patient, trusting that the authorities will do what is necessary to restore order.

However, it is equally important for the government and security forces to be transparent about the steps they are taking to address the root causes of the unrest.

The people of Bawku deserve more than just peace—they deserve a lasting solution that addresses the underlying issues causing the violence.

With the combined efforts of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, local leaders, and the community, there is hope that Bawku will once again find peace.

But this will require more than just a temporary security response—it will require a long-term commitment to building trust, dialogue, and stability in the region.
