Doctors at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have officially called off their industrial action, following engagements with government officials, traditional authorities, and health sector stakeholders.

The strike, which began on April 23, 2025, disrupted medical services and raised concerns about working conditions and healthcare delivery at the facility.

The Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) initiated the industrial action after an incident involving the Minister of Health, Honourable Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, during his earlier visit to the hospital.

“Subsequently, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and a Delegation from the Overlord of Dagbon, His Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, visited and interacted with members of DATTH regarding the impasse as well as the challenges members face in discharging their duties”

Recognizing the adverse impact on patients, the National Executive Council of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) intervened. As a sign of goodwill, emergency services were restored on April 25, 2025, pending further dialogue.

That same day, the GMA facilitated a crucial meeting between DATTH, the Minister of Health and other important officials.

“The Minister of Health expressed his regret over the challenges the hospital has faced over the years and the unfortunate incident that occurred”

During the meeting, the Minister reaffirmed his respect for the medical staff and pledged his commitment to improving their working environment through engagements with the leadership.

He emphasized his readiness to collaborate with the doctors to ensure the provision of necessary logistics to support work and to enhance healthcare delivery in the region.

“The Minister also took the opportunity to speak to Dr. Valentine Akulpwa and expressed his regret for the turn of events”

Return to Full Services

Following the engagements, an emergency meeting of DATTH was held to decide on the way forward.

The Association resolved to call off the suspension of services and urged all doctors to resume full operations at Tamale Teaching Hospital with immediate effect.

“The Leadership of DATTH and GMA thank the Minister for his maturity and also his immediate action in meeting some of the equipment and logistics requested by donating a significant number of equipment and medical supplies”

DATTH

The doctors have committed to working closely with hospital management, the Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders to secure a safe and conducive working environment.

They also highlighted the crucial role of His Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II in mediating the crisis.

“The association will collaborate with His Majesty, the King and Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, to address the challenges faced by the hospital and its staff including a safe working environment”

DATTH

Furthermore, DATTH called on the management of Tamale Teaching Hospital to maintain transparency and promptly communicate any challenges to the public. They also urged the media to remain “circumspect” and unbiased when reporting on health-related matters.

Despite the resolution, the doctors issued a caution that failure to deliver the needed logistics in the short to medium term could reignite industrial action.

“The Association will advise itself appropriately,” the statement read.

DATTH assured that it would continue to “collaborate with other cadre of staff in the hospital” to ensure continuous improvement of quality healthcare to all our clients.

The general public was urged to collaborate and support them in their line of duty to deliver quality healthcare
