Italian energy giant Eni has published its ‘Eni for 2024 – A Just Transition’ report, showcasing the company’s latest efforts in environmental sustainability, industrial growth, and social inclusion.

Now in its nineteenth edition, the voluntary sustainability report provides a comprehensive overview of Eni’s performance, achievements, and future strategies as it continues to drive global energy transformation.

Reflecting on the complex and rapidly evolving global energy landscape, Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi emphasized the need for adaptability and proactive leadership in addressing geopolitical shifts, climate concerns, and technological advancements.

“We live in times of rapid and complex change.

“Profound geopolitical evolutions, environmental challenges, and technological revolutions are reshaping the routes to global growth and energy security. The ability to adapt is no longer sufficient—we must lead the response to change.”

Claudio Descalzi, Eni CEO

One of the report’s standout revelations is Eni’s success in reducing net Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions.

Specifically, the Upstream segment saw a 55% reduction in emissions compared to 2018 levels, while overall company emissions dropped by 37%.

Eni reiterated its commitment to near-zero methane emissions by 2030 and introduced a new target to achieve water positivity at 30% of its high-consumption sites in water-stressed areas by 2035.

The company also spotlighted the ongoing implementation of its innovative satellite model, which focuses on developing integrated businesses aligned with the energy transition.

The report revealed that Eni’s Plenitude, a renewable energy arm, surpassed 4 GW in installed capacity and aims for 15 GW by 2030. The division also reported 10 million customers and over 21,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

“On the other hand, Enilive, the company dedicated to mobility products and services, reached a biorefining capacity of 1.65 million tonnes in 2024 and plans to exceed 5 million tonnes/year by 2030, also increasing the optionality of SAF production (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).”

At the heart of Eni’s strategy is the principle of a Just Transition—ensuring that no one is left behind in the shift toward a low-carbon future.

The company emphasized efforts to uphold human rights, occupational safety, and stakeholder engagement across its global operations.

“In 2024, the company strengthened actions to prevent and combat violence against women and worked to ensure that the transformation generates concrete benefits for communities in host countries.”

Claudio Descalzi, Eni CEO

In partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Eni focused on improving inclusivity and safety within the agri-feedstock supply chain.

Eni continues to invest heavily in social programs, with more than 100 active development projects across 21 countries. These initiatives support access to energy, clean water, healthcare, and education, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“This report is not just about emissions and profits.

“It’s about responsibility—how we grow, how we innovate, and how we respect the people and the planet we share.”

Moreover, 2024 marked a significant shift in corporate sustainability reporting with the introduction of the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Under these new regulations, mandatory sustainability disclosures have become a requirement for companies operating within the European Union.

While complying with EU legislation, Eni has gone a step further by continuing its voluntary reporting through ‘Eni for’, a supplementary document that enhances accessibility and transparency for stakeholders by presenting case studies, detailed analyses, and interviews.

Eni for 2024 reinforces the company’s commitment to being a leader in responsible energy development.

The integration of sustainability with business strategy remains central to Eni’s mission, with a clear focus on long-term value creation, climate resilience, and global equity.

In a world facing volatile energy markets and rising climate urgency, Eni positions itself as both a pragmatic operator and a forward-looking innovator.

Through its dual-track reporting—mandatory via the CSRD and voluntary through Eni for—the company continues to emphasize transparency, accountability, and shared progress.
