Hon. Eric Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament for Ketu North and newly appointed member of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has expressed commitment to drastic reforms and fostering responsible leadership as a member of the Board of Directors of Ghana’s power transmission company.

Describing the opportunity to serve as a defining moment for Ghana’s energy sector, Hon. Agbana acknowledged the enormity of the task ahead, pledging his unwavering dedication to public service and institutional reform in one of Ghana’s most critical state-owned enterprises.

“I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to H.E. John Dramani Mahama for the trust and confidence reposed in me. The ECG stands at a critical crossroads. While its role is central to Ghana’s development agenda, it is no secret that the company is beset with numerous operational, structural, and financial challenges.

“It is in such moments of difficulty that true commitment to public service must shine through.”

According to him, turning the company’s woes around requires a determined and results-oriented mindset from all board members.

The National Democratic Congress MP emphasised that this appointment is not merely a personal accolade but a summons to national duty in a time of institutional crisis.

“This appointment is not just an honour; it is a call to serve. It is a tough call, but leaders are born for moments like this,” he stated, signalling a readiness to take on the pressing task of reform with both humility and boldness.

Hon. Agbana’s comments also underscore the policy direction laid out by the sector minister, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, whom he lauded as one of the NDC’s most competent and experienced hands in the energy space.

Support for Minister’s Vision

Describing Hon. Jinapor’s mission as “bold,” Hon. Agbana expressed full support for the Minister’s efforts to reset the power sector.

“Our job has been clearly set out by the sector minister, Hon. John Jinapor, who is on a bold mission to reset the power sector. We must all support him to deliver”.

The newly appointed board member acknowledged the leadership of Dr. William Amuna, the Board Chairman, under whom he is expected to serve.

Dr. Amuna, himself a former CEO of GRIDCo, brings to the board decades of technical and administrative experience in the power sector.

Hon. Agbana expressed confidence in the board’s collective ability to rise to the challenge, stressing that he is committed to working diligently under the experienced leadership of the venerable Dr. William Amun to contribute meaningfully to reforms that will ensure ECG becomes more efficient, transparent, and responsive to the needs of Ghanaians.

The Ketu North MP’s appointment to the ECG board comes at a time when the company is navigating a host of operational, financial, and structural challenges.

Amidst growing public concerns over power outages (popularly known as dumsor), ECG’s billing systems, and the lack of transparency in procurement and revenue collection, the new board will face enormous pressure to act decisively.

Hon. Agbana’s emphasis on efficiency and transparency appears calibrated to align with public expectations for accountability and performance.

He also offered a broader reflection on leadership and institutional stewardship. “Let us all remember that Ghana’s future depends on how well we manage its key institutions,” he concluded.

Hon. Agbana’s call to action underscores the wider calls by citizens and stakeholders who have long yearned for a reform-minded approach to managing ECG.
