Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has officially returned to the country after spending two months in the United Kingdom receiving medical treatment.

Her return marks the end of a brief period of medical recovery following a short illness, and she is now set to resume her official duties.

The Vice President, who touched down in Accra this afternoon, was warmly received at the Kotoka International Airport by a high-profile delegation led by President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama.

Accompanying the President to welcome her were the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah; the Vice President’s Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia; and other senior government officials.

Also present at the airport were the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church and members of the Vice President’s family, who had kept vigil during her period of convalescence.

Heartfelt Gratitude

Looking composed and visibly grateful, Professor Opoku-Agyemang briefly addressed the gathering at the airport. In her remarks, she extended heartfelt gratitude to the people of Ghana for their support and prayers during her recovery.

She acknowledged the unwavering commitment and professionalism of the medical team at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), where she initially received treatment before being advised to continue her care abroad.

She also expressed deep appreciation to President Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for what she described as their “thoughtfulness, support, and care” throughout her health ordeal.

Her statement highlighted the interconnectedness of personal health and public duty, noting that the encouragement and goodwill messages from Ghanaians across the country had a profound impact on her recovery.

Initial Illness and Medical Treatment

In early March this year, the Vice President fell ill and was immediately attended to by doctors at the UGMC. After an initial period of treatment, her medical team recommended further care abroad to ensure a complete and thorough recovery.

She departed for the United Kingdom shortly thereafter, where she remained under observation and care until her recent discharge.

During her absence, the Office of the President and her communications team remained transparent about her condition, consistently updating the public while maintaining her privacy and dignity.

President Mahama himself confirmed the Vice President’s steady recovery during his Thank You Tour in the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking at Dodowa on Friday, May 16, the President relayed greetings from Professor Opoku-Agyemang and assured Ghanaians of her imminent return. “She is recuperating very well and sends her warm regards to all Ghanaians,” the President said at the time.

With her return, there is expected to be renewed momentum in her contributions to national policy discourse, particularly in the areas of education, gender equity, and social development — all of which have been central to her career as an academic and public servant.

In the coming days, the Vice President is expected to resume her official duties and re-engage fully with her governmental and political responsibilities.

The Vice President is expected first to have a period of strategic briefings and internal consultations before stepping into the public space.
