Media Personality Denounces Politicized Journalism in Ghana

In recent years, Ghana has witnessed a significant transformation in its media landscape, characterized by the rapid proliferation of news outlets and the advent of digital journalism.

However, this growth has come at a cost. The increasing commercialization and politicization of journalism have led to a troubling decline in the quality and integrity of news reporting.

As political affiliations dictate the narratives presented to the public, journalism’s essential role as a watchdog and a bastion of truth is being compromised.

Veteran Ghanaian comedian, filmmaker, and media personality Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, has expressed concern over the current state of journalism in Ghana, describing it as cheap, politicized, sensational, and lacking in depth.

KSM criticized the growing trend of political alignment in the media, which he believes undermines the profession’s core values.

“Unfortunately, in Ghana, journalism has become politicized. Are you an NPP journalist or an NDC journalist? That’s the kind of thing we’re seeing now, and it’s unfortunate.”

KSM

KSM explained that this politicization compromises the integrity of journalism, often covering up the truth instead of revealing it.

He further noted that one of the biggest problems facing the profession is the tendency to chase sensationalism rather than meaningful content.

“The problem is that it’s easier to go for the sensational. It’s easier to talk about petty, mediocre things. And sadly, there’s an audience for that. Many journalists, especially bloggers, choose that path because that’s where they get attention.”

KSM

The politicization of journalism in Ghana is traced to several interrelated factors. The historical context of political instability and authoritarianism has fostered a media environment where journalists often align themselves with political parties or factions to secure funding and protection.

This has resulted in a media landscape where news coverage is heavily biased, favoring particular political narratives while marginalizing dissenting voices.

Moreover, the rise of partisan media outlets has further entrenched this politicization. Many news organizations are now owned or funded by political actors, leading to a significant conflict of interest.

Journalists are often pressured to produce content that aligns with their owners’ political affiliations, compromising their ability to report impartially.

This situation has created a culture where sensationalism and partisanship overshadow factual reporting, diminishing the quality of journalism in the country.

According to KSM, this shift toward click-driven content has contributed to the cheapening of journalism. “Journalism has become cheap and sensational, not factual,” he emphasized.

He also attributed part of the issue to the rise of online platforms and social media, where people can freely publish unverified information without accountability.

“With the introduction of online and social media, there’s been a disruption. In order to stay relevant and compete, many feel they must go down that path.”

KSM

In addition to politicization, the commercialization of journalism has contributed to its devaluation.

The advent of digital media has led to an overwhelming competition for audience attention, prompting many news outlets to prioritize clickbait headlines and sensational stories over in-depth reporting and investigative journalism.

The implications of politicized and cheapened journalism extend far beyond the media landscape; they pose significant threats to the health of Ghanaian democracy.

A well-functioning democracy relies on an informed citizenry capable of holding power to account. When journalism becomes politicized, the public is deprived of unbiased information, leading to a misinformed electorate.

This, in turn, results in the erosion of democratic values and practices, as citizens are unable to make informed choices during elections or engage meaningfully in public discourse.

Moreover, the decline in journalistic integrity has broader societal implications. A media landscape characterized by sensationalism and bias exacerbates societal divisions, fostering polarization and conflict.

When news outlets prioritize political allegiance over factual reporting, they contribute to a culture of distrust, where citizens are skeptical of all information sources.

This environment hinders national unity and social cohesion, ultimately undermining the progress of the nation.

Despite his concerns, KSM encouraged young people not to be discouraged from entering the field. He urged aspiring journalists to focus on authentic, impactful storytelling that benefits society.

Citing the work of Multimedia journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, KSM said, “There are still brilliant journalists out there. Look at Erastus Asare, look at the kind of work he is doing. He is a journalist. It is just amazing.”

He advised upcoming professionals to consciously distinguish themselves by upholding truth and purpose in their work.

Politicised journalism in Ghana represents significant challenges that threaten the foundations of democracy and societal cohesion.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, it is imperative that stakeholders—including journalists, media organizations, policymakers, and the public—collaborate to restore the integrity and independence of journalism.

By prioritizing quality reporting and fostering a culture of accountability, Ghana reclaims journalism’s vital role as a watchdog of democracy, ensuring that citizens remain informed and engaged in the democratic process. Only through concerted efforts will the media regain its credibility and fulfill its essential function in society.
