Ghanaian musician, Gyakie, has opened up about how she manages her mental health as far as her music journey is concerned.

According to her, life is a marathon where individuals are on the run to make a living or meaning out of it.

She admonished young (new) and up and coming artistes to sometimes allow themselves feel hurt when they hit a blockage.

“I always use the word marathon. I see this entire journey as a race because everyone is running, and when you step on something that hurts you, you can allow yourself to fall, lose, or decide to continue till the finish line.”

Gyakie

The ‘Rent Free’ hitmaker further urged them to view those blockages as little setbacks that could be overcome.

“When these things happen, I see them as little setbacks supposed to push you. Most of these things, if you are a religious person, you will view them as things set in place to prevent you from reaching the finish line, but you ought to put them right.”

Gyakie

She stressed the need for such individuals to prioritize making their situations private, rather than public.

“I’m human and whenever I’m hurt about something, I allow myself to feel terrible, cry, or go on a break, and then I bounce back. What helps me is that I always do it in my private, amongst the people I trust. I don’t involve the public in things I don’t want them to have an opinion about.”

The musician highlighted the need for self-motivation in overcoming these set challenges. “When you put yourself in a shell, talk to yourself in a mirror, and try to get over that phase, you bounce back bigger and better. It always works,” she stated.

The journey of managing mental health as a musician is multifaceted, encompassing self-awareness, community support, and professional help.

While the pressures of the music industry are daunting, many artists demonstrate resilience and creativity in overcoming these challenges.

By sharing their stories and strategies, musicians not only foster a culture of understanding and support but also inspire others to prioritize their mental health.

The harmonious balance between creativity and mental well-being is essential for artists to thrive in their craft and lead fulfilling lives. As they continue to break the stigma surrounding mental health, consumers must recognize and support the unique experiences of musicians, ensuring that their voices remain strong and vibrant in the world of music.

The Ghanaian Afro-fusion artist tipped R2Bees member Paedae, also known as Omar Sterling, as her all-time favourite Ghanaian rapper.

Gyakie further explained the reason for her choice.

“My favourite rapper in Ghana now is Omar Sterling of R2Bees. He’s always been. Yeah, he’s my all-time favourite Ghana rapper. Omar Sterling is a poet. I always say every time that his rap is always different. The storytelling – he gives his audience stories about his life or things that are happening in real time, and it’s the way he puts the lyrics together for the listener to understand what he is saying that always gets me very happy. I think he’s a very good writer and he’s a good storyteller.”

Gyakie

While she admitted she is not a rapper, Gyakie noted that she loves the genre and tries to fuse it into her musical works once in a while.

The songbird further noted that her style of music is eclectic because growing up, she had music influences from a wider range of music genres.

Gyakie is currently out with a new song titled ‘Sankofa’, ahead of her upcoming maiden album, ‘After Midnight.’
