Mastercard and Access Bank Unveil Innovative Age-Segmented Card to Empower Ghana’s Youth

Mastercard and Access Bank Unveil Innovative Age-Segmented Card to Empower Ghana’s Youth

In a step toward deepening financial inclusion and literacy in Ghana, Mastercard and Access Bank (Ghana) PLC have launched an innovative, age-segmented card under Access Bank’s youth banking initiative, AccessU.

The partnership seeks to empower Ghanaians aged 13 to 40 by providing tailored financial solutions that evolve alongside their life stages and aspirations.

The newly introduced card is part of a bold initiative to bridge Ghana’s financial access gap, especially among the youth. With approximately 57% of the country’s population under the age of 25, the need for early financial education and access to digital tools is more pressing than ever. Through this strategic collaboration, Mastercard and Access Bank aim to equip the next generation with financial literacy, secure banking services, and a future-ready mindset.

Tailored Financial Solutions for Every Stage of Life

The age-segmented card is designed around three key life stages — teens, young professionals, and middle-established professionals — each offering features tailored to the unique needs and financial behaviors of its users.

For teenagers aged 13 and above, the card introduces them to banking in a safe, educational way. It includes a prepaid or reloadable debit card with parental controls, expense tracking features, and scheduled allowances. This setup aims to teach budgeting, saving, and financial discipline. Beyond the basics, the card offers perks like discounts on gaming platforms, streaming services, and educational tools — making financial learning both practical and engaging.

As users transition into young professionals, the card adapts to reflect their new responsibilities and ambitions. This stage features a debit card paired with an entry-level credit card that utilizes soft credit scoring to help users build a credit history.

With Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options for travel, gadgets, and e-commerce, the card aligns with the lifestyle and spending needs of a digitally-savvy generation. Subscription benefits such as Netflix and Spotify rewards and investment-backed cashback cards further enhance its appeal to young earners looking to grow their wealth.

For middle-established professionals — individuals more settled in their careers — the offering upgrades to premium debit and credit cards. These come with added benefits such as travel insurance, lifestyle perks, career advancement opportunities, and even business and SME-linked corporate cards for entrepreneurs. This stage is designed to support financial growth, business ventures, and holistic personal development.

Driving Financial Inclusion and Digital Empowerment

The launch of this product is not merely a technological upgrade; it is a vision-driven initiative that targets a major socio-economic challenge in Ghana — the lack of accessible financial education and services for the youth.

“This launch reflects our shared commitment with Access Bank Ghana to shape a more financially confident and digitally included generation,” said Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Manager and Area Business Head for West Africa at Mastercard.

“By embedding financial literacy and secure digital tools from an early age, we are empowering Ghana’s youth to grow into financially responsible adults while also giving families peace of mind.”

Pearl Nkrumah, Executive Director of Retail & Digital Banking at Access Bank Ghana, added: “Our youth are not just the future, they are the now.”

“Through our collaboration with Mastercard, we are not just offering banking solutions to young people, but enhancing their job market readiness, creating recruitment opportunities, empowering young entrepreneurs, and equipping them to achieve their dreams.”

Opportunities Beyond Banking

The impact of this innovation goes beyond just banking. The collaboration opens new doors for fintechs, merchants, and educational platforms to engage young Ghanaians in meaningful, responsible ways. By integrating digital financial tools into everyday life, Mastercard and Access Bank are creating a holistic ecosystem that supports financial growth, employment readiness, and entrepreneurial ambitions.

Moreover, this youth-focused initiative complements ongoing efforts under Access Bank’s ‘W’ Initiative, which is set to launch a dedicated proposition for women, aiming to further close gender gaps in financial access and economic participation.

As the card becomes available across Access Bank’s branches and digital channels, the Mastercard-Access Bank partnership is poised to redefine how financial institutions engage with Ghana’s youth. It establishes a new benchmark for the banking sector — one where financial products are not only accessible but also deeply aligned with the real-life journeys of customers.
