Ghanaian Musicians Urged to Prioritise Discipline

BigShot Band GH

The music scene in Ghana has gained international recognition, with artists like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, and Shatta Wale making significant strides in the global music industry through discipline and consistency.

However, despite the abundance of talent, many musicians struggle to maintain their careers.

Ghanaian live music group BigShot Band GH urged fellow musicians, especially emerging acts, to prioritise discipline if they hope to build sustainable careers in the industry.

The band emphasised that while talent and exposure are important, it is discipline that keeps musicians grounded and consistent over time.

“I would also like to add discipline. Discipline. Whatever you do, if you don’t have the discipline to do it, you can never achieve it. Although we have other things to do, we are so disciplined that at this time, on this day, we are going to rehearse. And then everybody agrees to it, and we do it.”

The group expressed concern about artists who are given performance opportunities but fail to deliver due to a lack of discipline.

“So if I should give somebody the platform… Okay, so we’re going to play as said, and then we’re giving you the platform. We know that, oh, you can do good, so go play. And you are not disciplined enough to get there. You stole the chance for every other person to come on board. So let’s be disciplined with our music.”

Discipline begins with the commitment to hone one’s craft. For Ghanaian musicians, consistent practice is essential to developing their unique sound and style.

The music industry is highly competitive, and artists must continually refine their skills to stay relevant. For instance, musicians like Kojo Antwi and Amakye Dede have remained influential figures in the industry due to their dedication to their art.

By setting aside time for regular practice, musicians experiment with new techniques, explore different genres, and ultimately create music that resonates with a broader audience.

Moreover, consistent practice fosters confidence, allowing artists to perform with greater ease and authenticity. This confidence translates into captivating performances that leave a lasting impression on audiences, thereby expanding their fan base and increasing opportunities for collaboration.

Professional Development as a Discipline

In addition to practice, professional development is another critical aspect of discipline that Ghanaian musicians must take seriously. The music industry is constantly evolving, with new technologies, trends, and business models emerging regularly.

Artists who remain stagnant risk being left behind. Therefore, engaging in professional development through workshops, courses, and mentorship proves invaluable.

For example, many successful musicians have invested time in learning about music production, marketing, and branding. By understanding the business side of music, artists make informed decisions that enhance their careers.

Furthermore, networking with industry professionals opens doors to collaborations and partnerships that might otherwise be inaccessible. As such, discipline in seeking knowledge and growth significantly impacts a musician’s trajectory.

Discipline also extends to ethical conduct within the music industry. Ghanaian musicians must recognize that their actions have far-reaching consequences on their careers.

Maintaining a positive public image is crucial for long-term success. Engaging in controversies, irresponsible behavior, or unethical practices tarnishes an artist’s reputation and alienates fans.

Artists like E.L. and MzVee have demonstrated the importance of maintaining a good reputation through their professionalism and integrity. By being disciplined in their conduct, they have built trust with their audience and industry stakeholders.

This trust translates into loyal fan bases and opportunities for endorsements, performances, and collaborations.

While talent is undoubtedly a critical component of success in the music industry, discipline is the foundation that supports it.

For Ghanaian musicians, embracing consistent practice, investing in professional development, and adhering to ethical standards are essential steps toward achieving sustainable success.

By taking discipline seriously, these artists not only elevate their craft but also contribute to the growth and recognition of Ghana’s vibrant music scene on the global stage.

As the industry continues to evolve, those who prioritize discipline will undoubtedly stand out and thrive amidst the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
