Daddy Lumba Finally Laid to Rest as Thousands Flood Baba Yara Stadium for Historic Farewell

Thousands of mourners from across Ghana converged on the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to bid a final farewell to highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

The iconic stadium was transformed into a solemn yet celebratory ground as fans, family members, musicians and political leaders gathered to honour a man whose music shaped generations. From the early hours of the morning, the atmosphere reflected deep grief, pride and gratitude for a life that left an indelible mark on Ghana’s cultural history.

The funeral marked the climax of months of anticipation, uncertainty and legal challenges that had threatened to delay the final rites. With the resolution of the court dispute, the nation finally came together to give Daddy Lumba a befitting farewell worthy of his immense contribution to Ghanaian music.

The familiar sounds of highlife classics filled the air as mourners softly sang along, some clutching songbooks, others wiping away tears. The blend of music and mourning created a powerful reminder of how deeply Daddy Lumba’s songs were woven into everyday Ghanaian life.

Security was visibly tightened as the crowd swelled, reflecting the scale of attendance expected for one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians. With a seating capacity of over 40,000, the stadium proved a fitting venue for a farewell that drew fans from every corner of the country.

From Legal Uncertainty to National Closure

The funeral followed weeks of legal disputes that had cast a shadow over preparations. A High Court injunction had temporarily halted arrangements amid disagreements between Daddy Lumba’s maternal relatives and the family head over burial authority and funeral finances. The court had imposed a GHC 2 million security payment, which applicants failed to meet within the stipulated deadline.

A ruling by the Accra High Court cleared the way for the burial, effectively lifting the injunction and allowing the funeral to proceed as scheduled. The decision brought relief to fans and family members alike, ending a prolonged period of uncertainty following Daddy Lumba’s death in July at the age of 60.

In spirit of unity, senior NDC officials present included National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene and the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi. Their presence highlighted the broad respect Daddy Lumba commanded across political and social divides.

The President and the National Democratic Congress donated GHC 50,000 to the family, a gesture that reflected official recognition of Daddy Lumba’s immense contribution to Ghana’s cultural heritage.

Also present was highlife legend Nana Acheampong who was in attendance to mourn his longtime collaborator, the late Daddy Lumba.

Music formed the heart of the funeral ceremony, just as it had defined Daddy Lumba’s life. Renowned musician Nana Acheampong delivered a tribute performance, celebrating the influence Daddy Lumba had on the evolution of highlife and popular music in Ghana. Throughout the ceremony, performances and recorded songs reminded mourners of the timeless hits that made Daddy Lumba a household name.

Fans sang, danced and wept in equal measure, reflecting the unique ability of Daddy Lumba’s music to evoke joy even in moments of profound loss. For many, the funeral felt less like a goodbye and more like a celebration of an extraordinary legacy.

A Life That Shaped Generations

Daddy Lumba is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s music industry. Over decades, his work shaped highlife and contemporary Ghanaian sound, drawing fans from multiple generations. His lyrics spoke to love, struggle, humour and social realities, making his music deeply relatable and enduring.

His passing marked a significant loss to the creative arts, but the overwhelming turnout at his funeral demonstrated that his legacy remains alive. Fans who travelled long distances expressed determination to pay their last respects, despite the legal complications that had surrounded the funeral arrangements.

As the funeral rites concluded and preparations for burial followed, a sense of closure settled over the stadium. Daddy Lumba’s final journey brought an end to months of uncertainty and opened a new chapter in remembering and preserving his legacy. Ghana said goodbye to a legend, but his music and influence will continue to echo for generations to come.
