Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s agribusiness landscape by leveraging the 24-hour economy policy to drive inclusive and sustainable industrial growth.

Speaking at the National Agribusiness Dialogue held today, the Minister stated that the new economic model provides a strategic pathway to significantly enhance productivity and value addition along the agriculture value chain.

“In line with this ambition, the government’s 24-hour economy offers an exciting and complementary strategic opportunity to amplify the transformative change we seek within the agribusiness sector”

She underscored the importance of round-the-clock operations in agro-processing, logistics, storage, and market access, describing them as pivotal tools for boosting efficiency, reducing post-harvest losses, and facilitating continuous value addition.

According to her, such an approach would directly support Ghana’s efforts to modernise its agricultural systems.

“Together, these initiatives will not only expand employment opportunities across the entire agriculture value chain, but also ensure that agripreneurs and SMEs are fully integrated into a modern, resilient, and globally competitive economy”

She emphasised that this broader industrial agenda is informed by principles of purpose, inclusivity, and sustainability. The Minister described the current administration’s strategic push as one that is aimed at creating “long-lasting structural shifts,” in the agribusiness sector.

“It is yet another demonstration of our president’s resolve to industrialise with purpose, inclusivity, and sustainability at the core,” Madam Ofosu-Adjare affirmed.

Resetting Agribusiness

The National Agribusiness Dialogue, which brought together players in agriculture, trade, and industry, was held under the theme “Resetting Agribusiness for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Growth.”

It was intended as a platform for exploring solutions that align Ghana’s agribusiness development with its broader industrialisation agenda.

“As we engage in this dialogue, I urge all stakeholders to contribute boldly and constructively. Let us share ideas, challenge assumptions, and think creatively about what the future of agribusiness in Ghana should look like”

Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry

According to the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, the 24-hour economy initiative, championed by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, has emerged as a cornerstone of its industrial transformation programme.

The Ministry believes that “increasing the operational lifespan of agribusinesses beyond conventional working hours” will help address chronic bottlenecks that have long undermined value creation in agriculture.

Through the policy, agribusinesses are expected to benefit from expanded access to energy, transportation, and digital tools to enhance productivity and streamline operations. The Ministry also indicated that the initiative is deliberately tailored to create entry points for “youth-led agritech startups and women-led agri-enterprises.”

The strategy is aimed at building a resilient ecosystem where industrial policy is not only reactive but anticipatory – enabling stakeholders to pre-empt disruptions, optimise production cycles, and respond dynamically to both domestic and global demand shifts.

The Minister reiterated that with President Mahama’s renewed industrial push, sectors like agribusiness must become drivers of growth in a 24-hour economy that does not sleep.

She believes that such positioning would allow Ghana to tap into regional and international supply chains more competitively, while retaining more value locally.

The dialogue, which marked one of the year’s major policy engagements for the sector, is expected to produce actionable recommendations toward further policy design and implementation.
