Helicopter crash finding raises concern

Helicopter crash

The recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight senior Ghanaian officials has prompted swift action from the government, with Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim offering detailed insight into the administration’s immediate priorities.

The incident, which occurred in the Adansi area, has deeply shaken the presidency and the wider nation, leading to a declared three-day mourning period and the formation of a planning committee to manage official proceedings.

Shamima Muslim confirmed that the government had received the bodies of the victims and is working urgently to complete burial arrangements, particularly for the Muslim victims, in line with Islamic traditions. She emphasized that this aspect was a matter of utmost priority.

“With regard to the general commemoration of the three days of mourning, we will, as we’ve been doing, communicate in real time the various actions that we’re going to be taking. Safe to say that we’re all just doing what we can to ease the pain for the families, for the government, and put in place all the necessary plans.”

Shamima Muslim noted that while the burial arrangements would be carefully managed, they would not be unduly extended. A dedicated committee is already coordinating the necessary steps to ensure that all proceedings unfold in an orderly and respectful manner.

According to her, this committee is focused on delivering a burial that truly reflects the dedication and service of the departed individuals. Their objective is to organize a smooth and dignified transition to rest for the fallen officials without unnecessary delays.

In addition to outlining these preparations, the spokesperson also spoke to the profound emotional impact the tragedy has had—especially on President John Mahama.

She emphasized that the president is grieving deeply, having lost not only key members of his administration but also long-time allies whose loyalty and commitment to public service had earned his trust.

“His Excellency has lost some of his best and brightest, loyal aides who stood by him, for him for the longest period,” she said, adding that their appointments reflected the deep trust he had in their capabilities and loyalty.

Media Urged To Tread Carefully In Helicopter Crash Coverage

As the nation continues to observe official mourning, a parallel conversation has emerged regarding how the media covers such national tragedies.

Accordingly, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim issued a heartfelt appeal to journalists and media organizations, urging them to exercise caution and sensitivity in their reporting on the helicopter crash.

She called on media outlets to refrain from displaying disturbing images related to the incident, emphasizing the importance of respectful coverage.

According to her, platforms have been asked to remove distressing visuals in order to maintain a sense of dignity for both the deceased and their grieving families.

She emphasized that “we can give a dignified coverage and still balance the need of the public to know what happens.”

Stressing that no one should have their memory reduced to painful footage, she urged the media to approach their reporting with empathy and discretion.

In her view, compassion should guide coverage during a period when families are already enduring profound personal loss.

On the investigative front, the government has mobilized military and specialized teams to begin a full-scale probe into the crash. The investigation task force, already deployed to the crash site, is expected to uncover the precise cause of the accident.

“As much as we don’t control death, we need to know if there are accidents that are avoidable, if there are avoidable mistakes, so we can avoid the next tragedy. I think that the task force that has been set up to investigate will do all of us a great service by coming up with what really happened, so the families can get a certain sense of closure.”

Shamima Muslim

According to her, the responsibility of the task force extends beyond just understanding what happened—it also includes restoring public trust and ensuring that lessons are learned from this painful episode.

Meanwhile, as the nation grieves, public attention remains fixed on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Many expect it to shed light not only on the technical causes but also on any broader systemic issues that may have contributed to the accident.

The helicopter tragedy has undeniably left a void in the heart of Ghana’s leadership, but the government’s response—anchored in transparency, urgency, and dignity—signals a determination to honor the fallen appropriately and learn from the disaster.
