ADB Honors National Best Farmer 2024 with GH¢1m Cash Prize

The 2024 edition of the National Farmers’ Day took a historic turn when the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) PLC presented an unprecedented GH¢1 million cash prize to Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong, the newly crowned National Best Farmer.

The ceremony, held earlier this month at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, showcased not only the individual triumph of Nana Brempong but also the enduring partnership between ADB and Ghana’s agricultural sector.

This grand recognition underscores the critical role farmers play in sustaining the country’s economy, feeding millions, and driving rural development. For Nana Brempong, the prize represents both a personal milestone and a renewed responsibility to inspire and empower farming communities nationwide.

Since 2001, ADB has been the proud sponsor of the National Best Farmer award, cementing its reputation as the financial backbone of Ghana’s agricultural transformation. At this year’s event, the Bank was represented by its Deputy Managing Director in charge of Operations, Mrs. Sylvia Naa Kwakai Nyante, alongside the General Manager for Agribusiness, Mr. Kwame Asiedu Attrams, and other top executives.

Presenting the GH¢1 million cash prize, Mrs. Nyante reiterated ADB’s long-term vision, stating, “This award is not just about recognising one farmer. It reflects our broader commitment to modernising agriculture, supporting the entire value chain, and creating lasting impact in our communities.”

For ADB, this gesture went beyond banking transactions; it was a reaffirmation of its central role in empowering agriculture and driving inclusive economic growth.

Government Commends ADB’s Consistency

Delivering the keynote address, Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, praised ADB for its unwavering commitment to the National Best Farmer award. He described the Bank’s sponsorship as a “cornerstone” of the Farmers’ Day celebrations and a key motivation for Ghanaian farmers to aspire to greater heights.

“This ceremony is more than just prize-giving. It represents our collective determination to transform the agricultural sector through the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA) and the flagship Feed Ghana Programme.”

Hon. Eric Opoku

By consistently rewarding excellence in farming, the government and its partners, such as ADB, continue to nurture a culture of innovation, resilience, and productivity among Ghana’s farming population.

The spotlight of the day was undoubtedly on Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong, whose contributions to agriculture earned him the enviable title of 2024 National Best Farmer. Known for his innovation, community development projects, and commitment to sustainable farming practices, Nana Brempong embodies the qualities of resilience and leadership that the award seeks to promote.

In his acceptance speech, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to both ADB and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the recognition and pledged to use the prize to empower his community. “This award is not just about me,” he said. “It is a responsibility to inspire and uplift other farmers, and I am committed to reinvesting this prize in initiatives that create opportunities for others.”

Driving Growth Beyond Banking

As Ghana continues to pursue agricultural modernization, ADB has positioned itself as more than a financial institution. Its philosophy of “Beyond Banking” speaks to its broader mission of enabling growth across the agricultural value chain. From financing mechanization and irrigation projects to supporting agro-processing and exports, the Bank remains a vital partner in Ghana’s journey to food security and economic transformation.

The GH¢1 million prize is not merely symbolic—it is a tangible expression of the Bank’s dedication to empowering farmers who serve as the bedrock of Ghana’s development. This investment in farmers reflects ADB’s belief that agriculture holds the key to unlocking Ghana’s industrialization and sustainable growth.

The 2024 National Farmers’ Day has set a new benchmark in rewarding excellence, and stakeholders believe it will inspire the next generation of farmers to embrace innovation and resilience. For ADB, the milestone highlights its evolving role in shaping Ghana’s agricultural future while deepening its legacy as a trusted partner to farmers.

As Nana Brempong steps into his role as an agricultural ambassador, his story will serve as a beacon of hope for farmers across Ghana.
