Ghanaian musician Francisca Duncan Williams Gawugah, popularly called Sista Afia, has opened up about her music career in Ghana.
In an exclusive interview, the female singer explained why her songs don’t top charts.
Speaking on the viral entertainment show, Sista Afia cried as she narrated how she had invested her savings into her music to shoot videos, promote her music, and organise events without winning any awards.
The musician stated that she knew she wasn’t a favourite after she released “Jeje” in collaboration with Shatta Wale and didn’t win any awards at the Ghana Music Awards, to motivate her to break the glass ceiling.
“I know perfectly that Ghanaians pretend that I don’t exist as a female musician in Ghana. I have known this since I released Jeje. From then on, I knew that I would never be a favourite or among the best. Since then, I knew some people didn’t like me. I knew I was never going to be a favourite. I have done a lot of hard work, but I don’t get the recognition. I have invested most of my savings in my music career.
“If I had saved that money, I would have been wealthy by now. But it’s painful because you are always investing in your craft, and sometimes you would spend your last cedis in the music video because you don’t know which one would give you the recognition that you are craving for all these years.”

Sista Afia, who began her music career in 2015, disclosed that although she has a fanbase, some stakeholders don’t support and push her songs.
She explained that most people feel compassion and support with musicians from poor backgrounds who struggle to become stars and eventually hit the limelight.
“Always, a lot of people tell me that because you came from abroad, that is why. Ghanaians want musicians who came from slums, and nobody knew that, but now they are stars, but when it comes to me, they always say that I am rich and I came from abroad, so why am I in Ghana to do music? For now, most importantly, I have the right team in my camp now so I believe 2025 is the year that my star will shine.”
