The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has in a significant move towards environmental stewardship and radiation safety, hosted the 11th International Symposium on Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) in Accra.

The five-day event, held under the theme “Broadening Optimization in Industrial Processes Involving NORM: A focus on Sustainability in Extractive Industries,” brought together experts from around the globe to address the critical challenges and explore innovative solutions in the extractive sector.

“This symposium marks a milestone not only for Ghana but for the entire region. It is a testament to our shared commitment to optimizing industrial processes while safeguarding human health and the environment.”

Prof. Samuel Boakye Dampare

Ghane Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), established in 1963, has been at the forefront of promoting the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology in the country.

The Commission’s mandate runs across conducting research, providing advisory services, and collaborating with international partners to enhance the country’s capabilities in the nuclear landscape.

In recent years, GAEC has intensified its efforts to address the sustainability challenges in the extractive industries.

The Commission has been working closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Ghana Association for Radiation Protection (GARP), the African ALARA Network (AFAN), and the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) to strengthen Ghana’s capacity in radiation safety and environmental management.

Collaborations and Partnerships

The NORM XI Symposium provided a valuable platform for international experts to convene and share their knowledge, experiences, and best practices.

The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration and partnership in addressing the complex challenges faced by the extractive industries.

The event also highlights Ghana’s commitment to working closely with international partners, including the IAEA, to further strengthen Ghana’s capacity in radiation safety and environmental management.

Leadership Commitment

The symposium was also marked with a somber moment as the participants observed a minute of silence to pay tribute to the late former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who tragically passed away about two months ago in the unfortunate helicopter crash.

Prof. Dampare also acknowledged the former Minister’s unwavering support for Ghana’s hosting of the NORM XI Symposium, eulogizing that “History will remember your dedication, support and excellence.”

This gesture points out the enduring legacy of those who have championed the cause of environmental protection and sustainable development in Ghana’s extractive industries.

GAEC makes efforts for Extractive Industries Sustainability

As Ghana continues to navigate the complexities within its energy sector, NORM XI Symposium hosted by GAEC stands as a symbol to the country’s dedication to positioning itself as a global leader in the application and use of NORM for research and development.

By fostering international collaborations, promoting environmental stewardship, and prioritizing radiation safety, GAEC is fast advancing its efforts in realizing Sustainability Across Extractive Industry.
