Galamsey: Prestea Huni-Valley MCE Laments over Destructions

Hon. Mathew Ayeh, MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Prestea Huni-Valley, Mathew Ayeh in a recent development has expressed his profound sadness and disappointment over the uncovering of an illegal mining operation in the Akokobedi Aburoo residential area of Bogoso.

“I’m sad to see how people damage the land for the sake of money,” Hon. Ayeh bemoaned.

His remark follows the scourge of illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” which  continues to plague Ghana’s natural resources, with devastating consequences for the environment and local communities.

Acting on a tip-off, Hon. Ayeh and the Municipal Security Council swiftly responded and discovered two excavators at the illegal mining site.

“What I saw upon arrival was deeply troubling. The illegal act was taking place right in a residential area. This reckless activity put the lives of residents in immediate danger, especially the children living there.”

Hon. Mathew Ayeh, MCE

One of the excavators was immobilized in the mud, prompting the officials to disable it by removing its control board and essential components. The second excavator was successfully seized and transported to the municipal assembly.

Hon. Ayeh lamented that it is disheartening to see such destruction-“how people, for the sake of money, can thoughtlessly damage the land and compromise our children’s future.”

The scale of the damage and the blatant disregard for the law have deeply disturbed the MCE, who has vowed to ensure that the perpetrators do not return to the site.

Efforts in the Galamsey Fight

The Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly, under the leadership of Hon. Mathew Ayeh, has been at the forefront of the fight against illegal mining in the Municipality.

The MCE’s actions in responding swiftly to the tip-off and taking immediate action to seize the excavators establish the municipality’s unwavering commitment to protecting the land and natural resources.

Over the past months, the municipal authorities have intensified their efforts to combat the galamsey menace.

These initiatives have included increased surveillance, the deployment of security forces, and the confiscation of equipment used in illegal mining activities.

The MCE’s pledge to ensure that the perpetrators face the consequences of their actions underscores the determination to hold those involved in these unlawful practices accountable.

Commitment and the Environmental Destruction

The illegal mining activities not only devastate the land but also have far-reaching consequences for the environment, water sources, and the overall well-being of local communities.

By seizing the excavators and vowing to prevent the perpetrators from returning to the site, the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly is taking tangible steps to address this pressing issue.

The MCE’s actions are not undertaken in isolation but rather as part of a larger, coordinated effort to combat the galamsey scourge across the country.

The Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly works closely with other local authorities, law enforcement agencies, and national initiatives, such as the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Blue Water Brigade, to enhance the effectiveness of their interventions.

This collaborative approach ensures that the fight against illegal mining is strengthened through the sharing of intelligence, the alignment of strategies, and the pooling of resources.

By fostering partnerships and strengthening inter-agency cooperation, the municipal authorities can leverage the collective expertise and resources to tackle this complex challenge more effectively.

Sustainable Solutions

While the confiscation of equipment and the removal of illegal miners from the site are important short-term measures, the long-term solution to the galamsey problem requires a multifaceted approach.

This includes addressing the underlying socio-economic factors that drive individuals to engage in these unlawful activities, as well as the implementation of sustainable development initiatives that provide alternative livelihood opportunities for affected communities.

The Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly, under the leadership of Hon. Mathew Ayeh, through the efforts shown so far, demonstrate it is committed to exploring these broader strategies, working closely with stakeholders to develop comprehensive solutions that prioritize environmental protection, social well-being, and economic prosperity for the region.

As the fight against illegal mining continues, the determination and actions of leaders like Hon. Ayeh serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the importance of safeguarding our natural resources and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
