President John Dramani Mahama received leaders of the Ghana Muslim Mission at the Jubilee House for a courtesy call to discuss the organization’s educational projects and the urgent infrastructural needs of its schools. The meeting was part of an ongoing collaboration between the government and religious organizations in improving access to quality education across Ghana.

Sheikh Amin Bonsu, President of the Ghana Muslim Mission, began by expressing appreciation for the government’s prior assistance in absorbing the Mission’s College of Education, following the model of Faruq College. He highlighted the urgent need for financial clearance to accommodate the growing student population that resulted from the absorption.

“When you came to our conference last year, by Allah’s grace, you promised and helped us complete the absorption of our College of Education – the Faruq one. Truly, as I’m speaking now, the college is completely absorbed. Thank you. What is left now is financial clearance”

Sheikh Bonsu underscored that the Mission consistently supports the educational sector, often providing infrastructure for its schools independently due to limited external funding. He emphasized that government assistance remains critical to ensure proper facilities and quality education.

He outlined several challenges faced by Ghana Muslim Mission schools, particularly in the Ashanti and Central regions. He cited Ghana Muslim Senior High School in Kumasi as the largest populated school in the country, accommodating approximately 4,000 students, yet its dormitory, bus, and auditorium remain incomplete.

The lack of adequate facilities has forced the school to divide students into multiple sessions, affecting academic work. “We urgently need a bus and fast transit,” he said.

Sheikh Bonsu also described other schools across the country where projects have remained unfinished despite high student populations. He emphasized that the Mission relies heavily on its own resources to build classrooms and facilities, and in many cases, the lack of government support has left schools operating under suboptimal conditions.

Urgent Appeals for Support

The Mission made specific appeals for additional facilities to improve learning conditions. These include the completion of dormitories, provision of auditoriums, and allocation of buses to facilitate transport for students.

The President of the Mission also requested support for a College of Education in Bole and a Nursing Training College in Sawla, highlighting the importance of expanding educational opportunities in underserved regions.

“We wish His Excellency to come and build that school. So that we will name it after him – that the first English and Arabic school has been rebuilt by His Excellency. May Allah bless you and continue to support you. We pray that inshallah you achieve success in all you are doing”

The Sheikh further highlighted the Mission’s ongoing commitment to education nationwide. The organization currently operates over 167 schools, many of which were built without government support, demonstrating the Mission’s capacity to develop educational infrastructure even with limited resources.

However, he stressed that additional government involvement is not only essential to meeting the growing demands of students and ensuring the sustainability of these programs, but to avoid putting an undue burden on the Mission, which functions as a religious organization without extensive financial resources.

Beyond emphasizing the importance of providing adequate facilities to enhance learning outcomes and ensure equitable access to education, the delegation invited President Mahama to their upcoming conference scheduled for December 21, highlighting the enduring relationship between the Mission and the government.

The meeting reflected the continuing partnership in expanding access to education. It further underscored President Mahama’s broader commitment to strengthening collaborations with religious organizations.

Sheikh Bonsu stressed that without support for dormitories, classrooms, buses, and specialized institutions such as the nursing and education colleges, the Mission’s schools risk falling behind in meeting students’ needs.

By prioritizing these initiatives, the Ghana Muslim Mission hopes to reinforce its educational network across Ghana.. The meeting concluded with mutual acknowledgment of the need to develop Ghana’s education sector.
