Young Activist’s Arrest Spurs National Debate on Power and Accountability

The arrest of Wendell Nana Yaw Yeboah, a 24-year-old head of mobilisation at Democracy Hub, has reopened long-standing questions about the cost of civic activism in Ghana and the extent to which political power is exercised with fairness or vengeance.

His detention, triggered by a petition from three regional ministers he had mentioned during a discussion on illegal mining, has drawn sharp commentary from Lawyer and Democracy Hub’s chief convener, Osagyefo Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who argues that the treatment of the young activist reveals a troubling appetite for “punitive politics.”

In his reflection on the events, Barker-Vormawor recounted that Yeboah had earlier endured a 17-day detention for protesting against illegal mining late last year under the NPP government.

He noted that the young activist’s latest detention stemmed from comments he made during an interview on galamsey, where he referenced ministers from regions deeply affected by illegal mining. For him, the principle was straightforward, expressed in an akan proverb that shaped the core of Yeboah’s argument.

“He said ‘every leader who watches Galamsey to happen is himself guilty of Galamsey. Ɔpanyin a ɔhwɛ ma mmɔfra we nanka, Sɛ yɛbu nanka-wɛfuo a, ɔka ho.’ A valid view, if you ask me”

Despite his position that that was a valid moral argument about responsibility, Barker-Vormawor conceded that public reactions showed that “people missed the nuance,” of the statement, prompting Democracy Hub to issue an apology to the parties affected.

Barker-Vormawor observed that Wendell Yeboah himself retracted his comments publicly within hours. He added that, as Chief Convener, he also personally reached out to two of the three ministers to apologize on behalf of the activist and the organisation, emphasising that the intent was never malicious.

Pursuit of Punishment

Despite the retraction and apologies, the three ministers – Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey of the Eastern Region, Dr. Frank Amoakohene of the Ashanti Region, and Joseph Nelson of the Western Region – filed a petition requesting a formal investigation.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest, stating that the accusation made on live radio required inquiry to establish the truth.

But for Barker-Vormawor, the reaction of state actors went beyond investigation. He suggested it was rooted in the excitement of political retribution. His frustration echoed sharply when he described the motivations that seemed to fuel the insistence on further punishment.

“The only reason I didn’t call the Western Regional Minister was because I couldn’t find his contact. But no, that’s not repentance enough – ‘We must show him where power lies. He should bring his evidence; else he hangs.’

“So he sits in jail; because our appetite for revenge, emboldened by power, must not rest till a pound of flesh is exacted”

The lawyer’s concerns extended beyond the governing side of politics. He noted that members of the opposition had openly celebrated the activist’s predicament, framing it as karmic justice for Democracy Hub’s role in shaping political outcomes under the erstwhile government.

Others, he said, used the moment to taunt him personally, asking why he had not turned against the current NDC government over the treatment of his colleague.

“In all this, a 24 year old sits in jail. Twice now for Galamsey – his apology insufficient” he reminded, insisting that the young activist’s fate should not become fodder for partisan one-upmanship.

He further emphasised that a democracy loses moral clarity when apologies, responsibility, and retractions no longer matter.

“At some point we must decide whether our politics still has room for grace. If a young man apologises, if he retracts his words, if those of us who lead him take responsibility and make amends, then the country must ask itself what the continued punishment is meant to teach.

“Because when the law stops being corrective and becomes performative, it stops protecting society and begins entertaining its darkest instincts. And in that theatre, nobody learns, nobody heals, and nobody grows”

A Larger Question

Beyond the immediate arrest, the situation forces a broader national reflection on civic courage, free expression, and the value placed on citizens who confront uncomfortable truths.

Barker-Vormawor suggested that the treatment meted out to Yeboah contradicts Ghana’s stated commitment to confronting illegal mining. He warned that the nation risks undermining the very people whose outspokenness is essential to accountability.

He framed it as a question of whether Ghana still has space for mercy – a recognition that youthful error corrected by apology should not be met with disproportionate punishment. In his view, a democracy worthy of its name cannot ignore the plight of a young citizen who advocates for “rivers he may never personally benefit from.”

He ended with a sober reminder that the stakes go far beyond the present moment, offering a striking reflection: “A society that refuses to protect its truth-tellers will eventually find that it has broken far more than eggs; it will have broken its future.”

As Yeboah awaits his next appearance in court, for Barker-Vormawor, the episode has become more than a legal matter. It has become a measure of how Ghana treats civic dissent, youthful activism, and the delicate balance between political authority and public accountability.

Whether the nation chooses grace or retribution may define not only the fate of one young activist, but the tone of its democratic future.
