Electricity supply has been fully restored to the Sunyani Municipality and surrounding communities in the Bono Region following a disruption triggered by a faulty transformer, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) has announced.
The restoration brings relief to thousands of households and businesses that were affected by intermittent power outages over several days.
Confirming the successful restoration, the Sunyani Area Manager of NEDCO, Ing. Eugene Odoi Addo, assured residents that power has been returned to all affected areas and that the company remains vigilant to ensure sustained stability.
“Since the incident occurred, our people worked assiduously to ensure the problem is solved, and by God’s grace, we were able to restore power to all sections of Sunyani.”

Ing. Addo added that technical teams are continuing to observe the network closely to prevent a recurrence. “We are still monitoring the situation,” he noted, underscoring NEDCO’s commitment to maintaining reliable service.
According to NEDCO, the transformer fault required urgent attention due to its central role in transmitting electricity to Sunyani and its environs. Engineers worked around the clock to diagnose and address the problem, prioritizing safety and efficiency throughout the repair process.
The outage, which began on Tuesday, January 20, disrupted daily activities across the municipality and nearby towns, forcing NEDCO to introduce load-shedding measures to manage the shortfall in electricity supply.
Residents had reported fluctuating power and extended blackouts, raising concerns about the impact on commerce, healthcare services, and domestic life.
Collaboration With GRIDCo Ensures Swift Resolution

The restoration effort was carried out through close collaboration between NEDCO engineers and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), whose expertise proved crucial in resolving the technical fault.
The joint team successfully repaired the affected transformer, enabling the resumption of full electricity supply across the network.
The cooperation between the two institutions highlights the importance of coordinated responses to infrastructure challenges within Ghana’s power sector.
By pooling technical resources and experience, the teams were able to minimize downtime and reduce the impact of the outage on consumers.
NEDCO officials indicated that the fault was isolated and addressed comprehensively, allowing electricity to be restored without further complications. The company expressed appreciation to residents for their patience during the repair period.
With the completion of the repair works, electricity has now been restored not only to Sunyani but also to nearby towns including Bechem, Duayaw Nkwanta, and Tepa. Businesses in these areas have resumed normal operations, while households are gradually returning to their usual routines.
For many residents, the restoration marks the end of days of uncertainty caused by the outages. Traders who rely on refrigeration, small-scale manufacturers, and service providers such as barbers and welders were among those most affected by the load-shedding, and the return of stable power is expected to boost local economic activity.
Health facilities and educational institutions, which had relied on backup power sources during the outage, have also welcomed the development, citing improved operational efficiency with the return of grid electricity.
Assurance of Stable and Reliable Supply

NEDCO has reassured customers that measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Ing. Addo emphasized that ongoing monitoring and maintenance of critical infrastructure form part of the company’s strategy to enhance reliability across its distribution network.
The company also encouraged customers to report any anomalies in power supply promptly, noting that early reporting helps technical teams respond more quickly to emerging issues.
As power supply stabilizes across the Bono Region, NEDCO’s latest intervention underscores the challenges facing electricity distribution infrastructure and the importance of timely maintenance and collaboration.
For now, residents of Sunyani and surrounding communities can look forward to a return to normalcy, backed by assurances from NEDCO that the lights are back on, and staying on.
