Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited (PSGL) with Investors

Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited (PSGL), a vital subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, is poised for a significant industrial turnaround following the successful acquisition of a new investment from the Guangzhou Hozdo Group.

This strategic partnership arrives at a critical juncture for the state-owned entity, which has long struggled with the weight of aging, heavily deteriorated infrastructure and pressing environmental concerns tied to its legacy tailings dams.

By injecting fresh capital and technical expertise into the mine, this deal aims to resolve systemic inefficiencies and restore the company to a position of productive, sustainable stability.

“Prestea Sankofa has endured years of hardship, and I am confident that with this new investor, the company can be revitalized to better serve the nation and its people. My primary goal as regional leader is to support struggling enterprises and help them attract the investment they urgently need.”

Hon. Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister.

The injection of capital from the Guangzhou Hozdo Group is expected to catalyze a comprehensive modernization program designed to address the deep-seated logistical and mechanical failures that have historically hampered production.

Beyond merely replacing defunct machinery, the investment will facilitate the integration of advanced rock mining capabilities, a move that requires significant acquisition of new, high-performance equipment to complement the existing processing plant.

According to the Managing Director, Alhaji Ishaq Dauda, this transition represents a departure from traditional reliance on legacy tailings, shifting toward a more robust and diversified mining operation that can reliably meet output targets while adhering to stricter environmental and safety standards.

Modernizing Infrastructure and Environmental Safeguards

The operational recovery strategy is already in motion, as management has shifted its focus toward securing the plant’s structural integrity.

Before the arrival of the new investment, the company took proactive steps to stabilize its foundation, including the replacement of critical processing infrastructure such as Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) tanks.

Perhaps most significantly, the company is currently constructing a modern tailings dam.

This project is a crucial intervention aimed at mitigating the environmental liabilities associated with its older, upstream-designed dams, which have faced scrutiny for their potential risks during extreme weather events.

By modernizing these disposal facilities, PSGL is aligning its operations with contemporary safety protocols, effectively silencing concerns regarding legacy contamination and dam failure.

Human Capital and Financial Stability

A hallmark of the company’s recent internal restructuring is the commitment to staff welfare despite the lack of active gold production during the transition phases.

Managing Director Alhaji Ishaq Dauda highlighted a notable shift in the corporate culture, noting that “for the past five months, despite a lack of production, salaries have been paid consistently.”

This commitment to the workforce is central to the company’s “operational revival” agenda, ensuring that the local labor force which serves as the backbone of the Prestea mining community remains intact and motivated.

By stabilizing the payroll, the company has managed to maintain morale, creating a stable environment where the new Guangzhou Hozdo Group can begin its integration process without the burden of industrial unrest or loss of skilled human capital.

Strategic Roadmap: From Tailings to Rock Mining

The long-term vision for PSGL, as articulated by current leadership, centers on transforming the facility from a niche gold-recovery entity into a versatile mining operation.

Historically, the company functioned primarily as a processor of low-grade surface materials and historic waste. However, the plan to integrate rock mining capabilities marks a major pivot in the firm’s operational model.

This transformation requires not only hardware but also a systematic redesign of current extraction and processing workflows.

As the Regional Minister emphasized, this development is not just a business transaction but a lifeline for the region’s economic health.

With the combined efforts of GNPC’s oversight and the technical muscle of the Guangzhou Hozdo Group, the facility is being re-engineered to survive another century of mining, effectively turning the page on its history of operational decline.
