The Deputy Ranking Member of the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, Honourable Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh has expressed disappointment over Canada’s decision concerning Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey, warning that this could affect Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on the issue, Honourable Asafo-Adjei argued that the situation should have been anticipated by the relevant authorities long before it escalated. He stated that the player’s international challenges were widely known and discussed across several jurisdictions, making the matter one that required careful planning and proactive engagement.
The Deputy Ranking Member noted that Thomas Partey is one of Ghana’s most influential players. He therefore stressed the importance of ensuring that all arrangements necessary for his participation in the tournament were addressed early.
Furthermore, Honourable Asafo-Adjei pointed to the committee established by President John Dramani Mahama to support Ghana’s World Cup campaign. He explained that each institution represented on the committee bears specific responsibilities designed to ensure the smooth participation of the national team.
According to him, the Ministry of Sports focused on player welfare and logistical arrangements. Meanwhile, he said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was expected to facilitate matters relating to international travel and engagement with foreign authorities.
“The warning signs were there for all to see. Once you know a key player faces international challenges, you prepare ahead and put measures in place. Ghana cannot afford surprises at such a crucial stage.”

Mr. Asafo-Adjei suggested that stronger coordination among the relevant agencies could have helped avert the current predicament. He emphasised that international sporting competitions require extensive planning beyond matters on the pitch.
Additionally, he highlighted the psychological demands facing the player amid the ongoing attention surrounding his situation. He indicated that footballers dealing with external pressures often require additional support to remain focused on performance.
The Deputy Ranking Member also urged authorities to place greater emphasis on protecting key national assets. He explained that elite athletes contribute significantly to national aspirations and deserve the necessary institutional backing. Moreover, Honourable Asafo-Adjei stated that the issue extends beyond one individual and touches on Ghana’s ambitions at the global tournament.
Diplomatic Efforts To Secure Midfielder’s Participation In World Cup
Honourable Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh urged the government to pursue every available diplomatic avenue to resolve the situation surrounding Thomas Partey and facilitate his participation in Ghana’s upcoming matches.
While discussing the available solutions, the Bosome Freho MP reiterated that alerts and concerns emerging from international developments should have prompted greater preparation. He said such signals often provide governments with opportunities to engage relevant stakeholders before challenges intensify.
The Deputy Ranking Member nevertheless expressed confidence that diplomatic options are available. He suggested that continued engagement with the appropriate authorities could still produce a favourable outcome for Ghana.
“All hope is not lost. There are diplomatic channels available and there are opportunities for engagement. The focus now should be on finding practical solutions that will help the player join the team.”

The Deputy Ranking Member acknowledged ongoing calls for the Foreign Affairs Minister to brief Parliament on developments involving Ghanaians in South Africa. Nevertheless, he argued that the immediate focus should be on resolving Thomas Partey’s travel challenges and facilitating his participation in Ghana’s upcoming World Cup fixture.
Honourable Asafo-Adjei explained that any parliamentary engagement could take place after the urgent matter have been addressed. He stressed that Ghanaians expect swift diplomatic action to help the player join his teammates ahead of the crucial match with Panama on Wednesday 17th June.
Accordingly, Honourable Asafo-Adjei encouraged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to dedicate the coming days to intensive diplomatic engagement. He stated that every necessary document, contact and communication should be assembled without delay.
He also highlighted the importance of the upcoming encounter against Panama. He explained that a positive result would strengthen Ghana’s position and boost confidence ahead of subsequent matches in the competition.
“Ghana needs its strongest squad available. We need every key player ready for the challenge ahead. The focus should be on results and giving the team the support it deserves.”
