Mauricio Pochettino etched his name into United States soccer history as the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) became the second nation after Mexico to book a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Australia in their second Group D match.
The Argentine tactician became the first coach to guide the United States to consecutive victories at a FIFA World Cup in the nation’s 96-year participation history, a milestone that underlines the impressive progress made by the tournament co-hosts under his leadership.
Goals in the first half from an unfortunate Cameron Burgess own goal and a finish from Alex Freeman proved enough to hand the Americans maximum points and strengthen their position at the top of the group.
With six points from two matches, the USA now join co-hosts Mexico in the knockout rounds and could secure top spot in Group D if Turkey fail to defeat Paraguay in the group’s other fixture.
The breakthrough arrived after just 11 minutes when the hosts capitalized on sustained pressure. A dangerous low cross flashed across the face of goal and Burgess, attempting to clear, could not sort his feet and diverted the ball beyond into his own net to give the Americans an early advantage.

The goal settled the hosts, who continued to dictate possession and create openings through their energetic pressing and quick transitions.
Freeman Continues His Rise
Australia struggled to cope with the intensity of the American attack throughout the opening period, and their problems deepened shortly before halftime.
Freeman, one of the breakout stars of the tournament, doubled the lead in the 42nd minute after another well-worked move from the hosts. The right-back showed composure beyond his years to finish clinically and put the United States firmly in control.
The goal capped another impressive display from the defender, whose emergence has been one of the major talking points of the American campaign. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively has added a new dimension to Pochettino’s side.

The USMNT entered the tournament carrying high expectations as one of the three hosts alongside Canada and Mexico, and their performances so far suggest they are capable of making a deep run. After opening the competition with victory over Paraguay, they have followed it up with another disciplined and efficient display against the Socceroos.
Australia Improve But Lack Cutting Edge
Australia manager Tony Popovic responded by making several changes at halftime in an attempt to revive his side’s fortunes.
The adjustments brought an immediate improvement as the Socceroos enjoyed more possession and spent longer periods in the American half. However, despite their improved control, they struggled to translate possession into meaningful opportunities.
Poor decision-making in the final third, coupled with inconsistent crossing and a lack of composure in front of goal, prevented Australia from finding a way back into the contest.
The United States remained organized defensively and rarely looked troubled. Goalkeeper Freese was largely untested as the American backline protected their lead effectively.
Neither side managed to add to the score after the interval, but the hosts were content to see out the match and secure another valuable three points.
Knockout Stage Awaits
Beyond the qualification itself, the victory carries significant historical significance for American soccer.
Before this tournament, the United States had never recorded back-to-back victories at a FIFA World Cup finals despite appearing at the competition since 1930. Pochettino has now achieved that feat further strengthening belief that the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager could lead the national team into a new era of success.
The clean sheet was another encouraging sign for the Americans after conceding in their opening fixture. With qualification already secured and first place in the group within reach, Pochettino may now have the luxury of rotating his squad ahead of their last group game and rest important players for the knockout rounds.

For Australia, the defeat leaves their qualification hopes hanging in the balance. The Socceroos must now deliver a strong performance in their final group match and rely on other results to keep their World Cup journey alive.
As for the United States, the celebrations can begin. Their place in the last 32 is secure, history has been made, and belief is growing that this talented generation could produce one of the country’s finest World Cup campaigns.
