Kenzo Kies loses life in a tragic incident in France

French football has been left in mourning following the death of Guingamp reserve team player Kenzo Kies, who lost his life after a drowning incident in the Rhône River near Lyon.

The 21-year-old footballer had been fighting for his life after being pulled unconscious from the water by emergency responders on Monday. Despite medical efforts to save him, Kies later died in hospital, bringing a tragic end to a day that has shocked clubs, teammates and supporters across France.

According to reports, Kies had entered the river with three friends in an attempt to cool off during an intense heatwave that has swept across the country. Temperatures climbed as high as 40 degrees Celsius in some regions, prompting many people to seek relief from the extreme conditions.

Emergency services managed to rescue three people from the river, but Kies was the last to be located. Firefighters eventually recovered him from the water and rushed him to hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

A Promising Journey Cut Short

Kies was regarded as one of the many young talents working to establish himself in professional football. Having developed through the youth systems of Lyon and Saint-Etienne, he joined Guingamp last year and was playing for the club’s reserve side while pursuing his ambitions of reaching the senior level.

His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the clubs that played important roles in his development.

In a statement posted on social media, Guingamp expressed its sorrow over the loss of the young midfielder. “Guingamp has had the sorrow of learning of the death of Kenzo Kies, a young player with the club.”

The Ligue 2 club also pledged to stand alongside the player’s loved ones as they come to terms with the devastating loss. “The club offers its full support to his family during this painful ordeal.”

Tributes have also arrived from Saint-Etienne, where Kies spent seven years honing his skills and building relationships with coaches and fellow players.

In an emotional statement, the club reflected on both his character and potential. “The Green Generation is in mourning. A resident of the Robert-Herbin Sports Centre for seven years, a talented player and discreet young man appreciated by all, Kenzo Kies has lost his life in dramatic circumstances.”

The statement highlighted the impact he made on those around him during his formative years.

“Saint-Etienne extends its most sincere condolences to his loved ones as well as to those – teammates and coaches alike – who shared a piece of his journey.”

Heatwave Raises Fresh Safety Concerns

Kies’ death comes amid growing concern over the dangers posed by the severe heat affecting France. Authorities have reported a significant rise in heat-related incidents, including drownings as people seek relief in rivers, lakes and other bodies of water.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu revealed earlier this week that 40 people have died in heatwave-related drowning incidents since last Thursday, underlining the scale of the crisis facing emergency services.

The tragedy involving Kies has therefore resonated beyond football, serving as another stark reminder of the risks associated with swimming in natural waterways, particularly during periods of extreme weather.

As tributes continue to pour in, Saint-Etienne has confirmed that plans are being prepared to honour the former academy player at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium when the new season begins.

The club hopes the tribute will provide supporters and members of the football community with an opportunity to celebrate the life of a young player whose future appeared full of promise.

The club concluded its tribute with a message that captured the sadness felt across French football. “Kenzo, in the corridors of L’Etrat, no one will ever forget you.”

For Guingamp, Saint-Etienne and everyone who knew him, the loss of Kenzo Kies is not only the passing of a footballer but also the loss of a young man whose journey had only just begun.
