Prime Video’s ambitious live-action adaptation of the blockbuster God of War video game franchise has hit a major roadblock. The series is recasting the iconic lead role of Kratos following a serious injury sustained by actor Ryan Hurst on the Vancouver set in late June 2026.
Production, which had been filming since February, immediately paused and is now slated to restart in mid-October with a new actor stepping into the Spartan warrior’s boots.
The decision, described as heartbreaking yet necessary by insiders, comes after careful deliberation by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Hurst, best known for roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, had undergone a dramatic physical transformation for the part, gaining approximately 40 pounds of muscle to embody the hulking, rage-fueled Kratos.
He was actively performing demanding stunts when he tore his bicep, an injury that required surgery. While Hurst is recovering, sources indicate his full return to the intense physical demands of the role could extend well into 2027, clashing with the production’s tight two-season, back-to-back filming schedule.
This marks a rare and unfortunate setback for a high-profile project. Only four episodes had been completed at the time of the incident. Those scenes will now need to be reshot with the incoming actor.
The challenge is compounded by the presence of young co-star Callum Vinson as Atreus, Kratos’ son. Child actors grow quickly, making it impractical to salvage much of the existing footage without continuity issues.
The God of War series draws primarily from the 2018 PlayStation reboot and its 2022 sequel Ragnarök. It follows the father-son duo as they journey through a mythologically rich world to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother.
Along the way, Kratos grapples with his violent past while attempting to impart wisdom to his son, who in turn teaches his father about humanity and compassion. The story blends visceral action with deep emotional storytelling, elements that propelled the games to massive critical and commercial success.
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) is steering the project, bringing his expertise in character-driven genre television. The cast had already assembled an impressive ensemble of supporting players. Mandy Patinkin portrays Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays Thor, Ed Skrein takes on Baldur, and Teresa Palmer appears as Sif.
Additional roles include Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and the dwarf brothers Sindri and Brok portrayed by Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn. Frederick E.O. Toye directed the first two episodes.
Hurst’s casting as Kratos was announced earlier in 2026 to significant buzz. Fans and critics praised the choice for its potential to capture the character’s gravelly intensity and physical presence, especially after first-look images showed him in full makeup and armor.
The injury occurred during a stunt sequence, underscoring the physically grueling nature of bringing the game’s over-the-top combat to live action.
For Hurst personally, the timing is particularly tough. He is also featured in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which opened around the time the news broke. Production insiders emphasize that his recovery remains the priority, and the recasting reflects logistical realities rather than any reflection on his performance or commitment.
Similar situations in the past, such as Winston Duke’s injury leading to O’Shea Jackson Jr. stepping in on Apple’s Swagger, or John Cho’s knee injury delaying Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, highlight how costly and disruptive on-set accidents can be for big-budget series.
The God of War adaptation represents a significant investment for Prime Video in gaming IP. PlayStation Productions is closely involved, aiming to translate the franchise’s cinematic quality and emotional depth to the small screen.
The original games, developed by Santa Monica Studio under Cory Barlog’s direction, sold millions of copies and earned numerous Game of the Year awards. Expectations are high for the series to capture that magic while expanding the universe for new audiences.
Prep work is expected to ramp up in mid-August, with cameras rolling again by mid-October. The search for a new Kratos is presumably already underway, though no names have surfaced publicly. The role demands not only imposing physicality but also the acting range to portray a complex anti-hero haunted by his past. Industry observers note that finding the right balance quickly will be critical to keeping the production on track.21
This development arrives amid broader conversations about safety on film and television sets, particularly for action-heavy productions. While specific details about the stunt that caused the injury remain limited, it serves as a reminder of the risks actors and stunt performers face daily.
Amazon and Sony have not commented publicly beyond confirming the recast through industry reports.

Names like Dave Bautista, who has expressed interest in video game adaptations, or other physically commanding performers have been floated informally, though nothing is confirmed.
Public Reaction
Fans of the franchise have reacted with a mix of disappointment for Hurst and excitement about the project moving forward. Social media buzz reflects concern for the actor’s well-being alongside speculation about who might replace him.
The series is part of a growing slate of video game adaptations, following successes like The Last of Us on HBO and Arcane on Netflix. God of War stands out for its Norse mythology backdrop and father-son dynamic, elements that lend themselves well to serialized storytelling.
With two seasons planned from the outset, there is ample room to explore the rich lore, including encounters with gods, monsters, and moral dilemmas.
As production restarts, all eyes will be on how swiftly the team can rebound. The hiatus, while costly, provides an opportunity to refine scripts and visuals based on early footage.
Ronald D. Moore’s involvement suggests the show will prioritize narrative substance alongside spectacle, much like the games balanced brutal combat with poignant character moments.

Hurst’s exit from the role is a significant chapter in what has been a whirlwind development for the series. His dedication during prep and early filming was widely praised.
The entertainment industry often requires such difficult choices when timelines and physical realities collide.
For now, the focus shifts to casting a new Kratos who can lead this epic journey and help deliver the adaptation fans have been anticipating.
