The husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has passed away at a hospital in Zanzibar after suffering from a heart condition, bringing to an end the life of a man who occupied a historic position in Tanzania while largely remaining outside the political spotlight.
Ameir died at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment.
The announcement was made by Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed condolences to President Samia, Ameir’s family and friends following his death.
According to the Vice President, the funeral arrangements were already under way in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar, as family members and the wider community prepared to bid farewell to the retired agricultural academic.
“We are saddened to announce the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He died today at 8 am in Zanzibar where he was receiving treatment for heart problems.”

The Vice President also led national tributes to Ameir, recognising his place in the life of President Samia and in Tanzania’s recent political history.
News of his death has also drawn condolences from across the region, with Kenyan President William Ruto describing the development as one he received with “deep sorrow.”
President Ruto stated that “President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son.”
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also expressed condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.
The AU Commission chairperson conveyed his “deepest condolences” to President Samia on the passing of her husband and extended his sympathy to the family during what he described as a difficult period.
H.E. Mr Youssouf also wished the family strength, courage and solace, while praying for the peaceful repose of Ameir’s soul.
Ameir’s death comes after nearly five decades of marriage to President Samia, whom he married in 1978, long before she rose to become one of East Africa’s most prominent political figures.

The couple had four children together: three sons and a daughter with their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, also pursuing a career in politics.
Wanu has served in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives, continuing a political path that has become associated with the family.
Despite his marriage to the Tanzanian president, Ameir maintained a notably private life throughout his years beside her. He rarely appeared publicly with President Samia and was only occasionally seen attending official events.
His reserved public profile stood in contrast to the growing international and domestic attention surrounding his wife, particularly after she assumed Tanzania’s presidency in 2021.
President Samia became president following the death of President John Magufuli in March 2021, making her Tanzania’s first female president.
Her assumption of office also made Ameir Tanzania’s first First Gentleman, an unofficial title used for the husband of a serving female president.
The position placed Ameir in a unique place in the country’s political history, although he largely avoided the public prominence traditionally associated with presidential spouses.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan: The Man Behind Tanzania’s First Female President

Before becoming known as the husband of Tanzania’s president, Hafidh Ameir Hassan had established himself in the agricultural and academic fields.
He was a retired agricultural officer and academic from Zanzibar, with much of his professional life focused on agriculture rather than politics.
His career contrasted with the increasingly prominent political trajectory of his wife, Samia Suluhu Hassan, who moved from public service into national politics and eventually became Tanzania’s president.
Over the course of their nearly five-decade marriage, Ameir remained beside his wife through her progression in public service, including her tenure as Tanzania’s vice-president and her eventual elevation to the presidency.

His public appearances alongside the president were relatively rare, with his presence generally limited to selected official occasions.
That approach became particularly notable after President Samia took office in 2021.
As Tanzania’s first female president, Samia’s presidency generated considerable attention both within the country and internationally.
The role was historically significant but did not fundamentally alter Ameir’s preference for privacy.
Rather than becoming a regular presence at political functions or using the position as a platform for public engagement, he largely remained behind the scenes.
His position as First Gentleman was therefore defined less by public visibility than by its historical significance.
