GSE Loses GH¢3bn as Financial Stocks Suffer Sharp Decline

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) suffered a fresh setback at the close of trading, with the market capitalisation losing a staggering GH¢3 billion as financial stocks came under renewed pressure.

Market capitalisation fell from GH¢280.8 billion to GH¢277.8 billion, equivalent to approximately US$24.3 billion, as declining share prices outweighed gains recorded by a handful of listed companies.

The latest session painted a mixed picture for investors. While trading volume more than doubled compared with the previous session, the increase in activity failed to translate into stronger market value.

Trading Volume Explodes Despite Turnover Decline

A total of 3,644,316 shares changed hands during the session, representing a remarkable 112% increase in volume compared with Tuesday, September 8.

However, the surge in trading activity came alongside a 14% decline in turnover, with the value of shares traded reaching GH¢5.63 million.

The contrasting figures suggest that although investors were significantly more active in terms of the number of shares exchanged, much of the activity was concentrated in relatively lower-priced securities.

In all, 25 listed equities participated in trading, with five stocks recording gains while seven suffered losses.

The remaining securities either maintained their previous prices or recorded no significant movement during the session.

Access Bank Suffers Heavy Blow

Access Bank Ghana emerged as the biggest casualty of the trading session after its share price plunged 9.97% to close at GH¢26.56.

The sharp decline placed the bank at the bottom of the day’s price performers and contributed to the broader weakness recorded across the market.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin also suffered a significant setback, falling 9.09%, while Digicut Production & Advertising declined by the same 9.09%.

Ecobank Transnational rounded out the major losers, with its share price dropping 6.29%.

The declines among banking and financial stocks were particularly significant given the continued importance of the financial sector to the performance of the GSE.

Fan Milk Emerges as Market Star

Despite the heavy losses recorded by several equities, Fan Milk provided a major bright spot for investors.

The company led the gainers with a powerful 7.33% increase, closing at GH¢14.20 per share.

CalBank followed with a 2.74% appreciation, while Enterprise Group gained 1.07%.

MTN Ghana also ended the session in positive territory, although its gain was marginal at 0.15%.

The performance demonstrates that investor interest remains selective, with some equities attracting buying pressure even as broader market sentiment weakened.

Trust Bank Gambia Dominates Volume

Trust Bank Gambia was the standout stock in terms of trading volume, accounting for approximately 3.07 million of the shares exchanged during the session.

Its activity dwarfed that of other actively traded equities and was a major driver of the overall 112% jump in market volume.

Kasapreko followed with 189,280 shares traded, while MTN Ghana recorded 135,335 shares.

Ecobank Transnational also featured prominently, with 103,087 shares changing hands.

The concentration of trading activity in Trust Bank Gambia highlights the extent to which individual securities can influence overall market statistics, particularly when large volumes are exchanged in a single session.

GSE Composite Index Slips Further

The weakness in share prices pushed the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) lower.

The index shed 84.16 points, equivalent to a 0.57% decline, to close at 14,752.21 points.

The latest performance extends the index’s short-term losses. Over the past week, the GSE-CI has declined by 0.9%, while its four-week loss stands at 3.42%.

Despite these recent setbacks, the benchmark remains firmly in positive territory for the year, recording an impressive 68.21% year-to-date gain.

This means that although the market has experienced a notable correction in recent weeks, investors who entered the market earlier in the year remain significantly ahead on the broader index.

Financial Stocks Face Deeper Pressure

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) experienced an even sharper decline.

The index dropped 1.62% to close at 7,754.42 points, bringing its one-week loss to 1.35% and its four-week decline to 4.47%.

The latest fall signals increased pressure on financial-sector equities, with several banking stocks among the day’s biggest decliners.

Nevertheless, the GSE-FSI maintains a strong year-to-date performance, with a gain of 66.86%.

The divergence between its impressive annual return and recent losses suggests that the financial sector has entered a period of consolidation following substantial gains earlier in the year.

Investors Watch Market Correction Closely

The latest session leaves investors watching closely for signs of whether the recent weakness will deepen or begin to reverse.

The GSE’s year-to-date performance remains exceptionally strong, but the consecutive short-term declines in the benchmark indices and the GH¢3 billion reduction in market capitalisation highlight the volatility currently shaping the exchange.

With five gainers against seven losers, selling pressure outweighed buying momentum during the session.

At the same time, the sharp increase in trading volume indicates that investors have not abandoned the market. Instead, the heavy activity suggests that market participants remain engaged, even as they reassess valuations and reposition their portfolios.

The coming sessions could therefore prove crucial in determining whether the latest declines represent a temporary correction or the beginning of a more sustained period of weakness on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
